If Silpheed is based on Sylph, then Salamander is the only one of the four that isn't a Summon Spirit in a Tales game (i.e. Tales Of Symphonia). (For fire, they use Efreet instead.)

And on that note, now I know why they chose Gnome for the Earth Summon Spirit. At first, I thought that was just another generic earth-related name, like Lightning-spirit Volt and Dark-spirit Shadow (real creative names there, Namco).

There! Or here...whichever one is the correct one.

Anyone wanna add more examples and make it more readable?

In other words, help make it sound like a trope if you can. I added the first few examples that come to mind, not sure if Monster Rancher should be under video games or anime/manga.

It's primarily a video game franchise, so it should go under "Video Games".

Hmmm....so no anime examples? I'm pretty sure a few fantasy series would have them.

^ Give it time. I know there are some anime series out there that reference Undine and Sylph, but I don't remember anything referencing Salamander for it's fire element, and especially NOT Gnome.

@Signed: From what I can see, those four are restricted to JRPG(because JRPG do the "Make monsters based on mythical creatures" thing, WRPG DO have mythical creatures, but less so when compared) or Tales Of series xD

Seriously, Salamander seems rather rare in fantasy now that I think of it, gnomes are usually gnomes, sylphs I can't remember, and Undine neither.

"Gnome"? Compared to the other three, it sounds kind of... simple and undignified. I'm picturing these huge CGI fire, water and wind spirits soaring around in the sky, and a garden gnome trailing behind them.

^^^ Well, if you ever see a lizard being associated with fire, it's more or less thanks to Paracleus or whatshisname making the Salamander the fire element. the same can probably be said for making water elementals look like a woman wearing a dress while all the other 3 elementals look...non-human elemental-ish.

I have no idea why Dn D and World Of Warcraft made Gnomes a race. And as for Sylph...most people don't even know what it is or even heard of it...but personally, I like Silpheed because it's fun to say out loud.

So ummm....when exactly does something in YKKTTW become a trope anyways? Rather than just a discussion in YKKTTW?

You have to wait at least three days. If there are disputes about whether it's a trope, the name, or anything else about it, then you should wait however long it takes to resolve those.

Then you push the launch button and follow the instructions. If you need help at any point, give me a holler, I've launched dozens of tropes now.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.

I have no idea why Dn D and World of Warcraft made Gnomes a race.

They're using the Fair Folk version of Gnomes, which has been used in Fairy Tales and Fantasy for a long time.

Also, Salamanders are associated with Fire because of an old wives tale about a Salamander walking over burning coals unharmed. Leading to the impression that Salamanders were resistant to fire, then the impression that they were "of fire".

Hell, early Firefighter's emblems had the Salamander on it.

I've been playing Tales of Symphonia too long, I was totally wondering why Signed epic-fail misspelled Sylph and Efreet.

I too have always been fascinated by the big boss creature w/element system.

Vagrant Story used all four as elemental types for magic jewels. It had elemental monsters too, but they had different names.

Salamanders often live inside piles of wood. When the people take their piles of firewood inside and burn them, they would often see salamanders crawling out of the wood, to save themselves from the fire obviously. Thus, the myth arose that salamanders were born in fire.

Wait...so Salamanders became a mythical monster because people used to believe in abiogenesis?!

Uh yeah, kinda like how The Greeks thoughts a big man was makng electrcitiy fall from the sky.

That's how most myths and mythical creatures work.

Anyhow, I've sort of been curious about the appearance of Gnome. Because in Tales of Phantasia he looked like a grey Dugtrio without the noses and an extra head and in Symphonia it was... another one of Nihon's strange and confusing "Cute" things.

Weird, I totally didn't associate his appearance with a mole but now that I think about it....

Though really I'm more curious about the "Dugtrio" look.

^ Well to be fair, Scyther does not look anything like an actual mantis as well. And Starmie looks more like a specialized sex toy for a lesbian party than a star fish. Growlithe and Arcanite look more like tigers.
