According to one of the defendants lawyers on CNN; her clients aren't entirely at fault because she consented and she was wearing makeup. I really hope I'm mishearing things in my old age, it's shit like this that reminds me that vigilantism isn't such a bad thing.

The alleged gang rape of an 11-year-old girl by at least 18 boys and young men

I-

Fuck.

You.

Eighteen of you and none of you didn't think to stop?

Shit...

I know fucked up stuff happens from time to time but 18 people?!! And in a tight knit community of the sort I usually believe to be immune to this sort of stuff. Its just... not something you'd expect to happen in a town of 8000 people.

The fact that this many child rapists can not only exist, but contact each other, is extremely disturbing.

Slam 'em in jail for the rest of their lives, console the girl and family as best as possible, try to assuage the rest of the community (and try to get to the bottom of how crap like this can happen, and investigate for duplicate cases) and pray this doesn't turn into a racial conflict. I sure hope the head of town, whoever that person is, is strong on community relations and law enforcement.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

La dee da.

It's not just a 'deep south' thing. Here on the east coast it's increasingly common to blame rape victims (this is even coming from other women) for not covering the 3 B's (breasts, belly, and butt). Because they're men, they can't help it.

I hate discussing rape; it's so depressing, but stories like this... some people are just dead-set on blaming the victim, aren't they? They'll look for any reason at all.

Here's a thought- defense attorneys for alleged rapists should no longer be able to bring up the victim's makeup or clothing or anything like that, on pain of disbarment.

[up] I don't see how that's remotely just. They raped her; they did not kill her.

If you believe rape is "a fate worse than death", you should agitate to give those found guilty the rape penalty.

But that's just a day in prison.

All of the defendants arrested are African-American and the girl is Hispanic.

This, combined with the extremely high number of defendants, makes me have doubts for this trial. It immediately reminded me of a famous trial where 2 white woman lied about being raped on a train by somewhere between 8 and 11 black men (I watched a documentary, but can't remember the names or the exact number).

The first sentence of the article says "alleged."

I could suspect racism because of the fact that this is taking place in a small Texan town.

They're being paid for the quality of their arguments. With that in mind, it does rather make sense that those who tend to rely on poor arguments should be fired.

@Grain: I recall that case. I don't know if the same kind of fear that let that lie go so far exists between the Hispanic and Black community. I'd like to find out more about the case, I'll see if I can dig up some more evidence, unfortunately if all we have to go on is her word whether they're guilty or not won't matter.

I think that anyone would cringe at the idea of 18 scary black men raping an innocent 11-year-old girl, regardless of the girl's race.

[up][up][up][up][up]Reports on this on crime always say alleged until guilt has been proven.

And I think anyone would cringe at the thought of an eleven-year-old girl being raped by eighteen people at all, regardless of the race of the perp.

[up][up]I disagree. People are not colorblind, especially in situations of fear and anguish where we need somebody to blame. Blacks have a history of being butt monkeys for American society, especially in the south, and especially in small towns.

@Game Chainsaw: cell phone footage apparently, though the media has been wrong about such things before, and I really would rather get some official documentation.

@Grain: but the specific fear that allowed the previous case to go so far wasn't about the number of men, it was specifically because they were black. 18 men raping someone is always terrifying, but in the previous case it was specially fear of black men and I don't know enough about Hispanic/Black race relations to say if such a fear is there.
