Does he intentionally act like an idealist in order to conceal his true character? If so, why? If not, why does he seem like an idealist on the surface?
The reason why people mistake him for an idealist should be connected to the circumstances under which his more cynical nature would become apparent.

He acts like an idealist because he thinks most those around him are to cynical and depressing and need some sort of reminder of the better side of people. To be fair, they are not well adjusted people, but he's seen enough war to know that pure idealism doesn't go very far either.

Okay, I have a character, who's your stereotypical Wide-Eyed Idealist, on the surface, but deep down he's a Knight in Sour Armor. There's a bit of a problem with this, however.
I want to have his nature revealed to the other characters (or at least three or four of them) but I'm not sure what kind of events would have to conspire to make this happen without having it seem contrived or pulled out of nowhere. This is a sci-fi military setting, if that helps.
