I don't like silent protags in Sonic. Like it worked for back in the day but now it'd just seem weird after hearing them talk regularly for so long.

And yeah, the spindash wouldn't work so well in Generations. In fact I don't even think it was that fantastic in SA 1.

Its incredibly broken in Sa1 since all you do with it is spam the action button repeatedly.

I would argue that made it more of a Game-Breaker than anything else.

I know on those A-ranks I'd spam spindash like a madman. I don't recall them being too hard except for Emerald Coast and Red Mountain.

Maybe Big could play like Umihara Kawase? Or just be a plot element.

I really don't care about character's scrappy statuses. I like Tails myself.

Tell me, what is your opinion of Chip? I think he's annoying, but he's kinda fun and it's pretty heartbreaking to see him leave. Instead of focusing on the negative, I focused on the positive: he was cute, I liked his Big Eater attitude, and though it was a bit of a meh twist, Chip's VA handled the Light Gaia scene really well. I really liked the ending scene which mirrors the first scene, which Chip's VA again manages to nail.

Even if Big isn't that great, I can at least say I enjoy his design. Maybe if he was like an old wise guy with a taste for fish...

I like Chip, though I wish he'd been used as "Tails 2.0" a bit less - I really started enjoying his character when they started to get more into his hidden past.

I enjoyed Chip, then again I also enjoyed Big. I tend to think the comical characters are more vibrant and enjoyable than the often pretentiously done serious ones.

Chip had an endearing personality, if occasionally annoying, and his bond with Sonic was developed well. It was a shame to see him go (even if Sonic's stoicness kinda ruined the moment) but he left his mark and done his role well. Much like Gamma, he's a character they knew how to use and when he'd served his purpose.

[up]My ideal version of Tails would likely be a Composite Character of his current form and Chip admitedly.

As for Big, I think his gameplay mode was decent in Heroes, a bit slow, but with some moderate speed, and power based moves like body slam and his rod amped to badass levels. That said I actually didn't mind his fishing minigames in SA 1 that much, though they would have likely worked better not being the whole of his game.

I actually like his personality as well. In fact I thought he was a much more sympathetic character in his original appearances than his so called Rescued from the Scrappy Heap revision in Chronicles.

I like Big's personality. And oh dear god did I love Lazy Days. Seriously, that song is the best.

And while I didn't hate his gameplay, and didn't think it was hard, I didn't feel it fit with Sonic at all. There was basically no platforming or speed. No puzzles.

Sonic's levels were the standard, get from the beginning to the end. Tails levels were beat someone else in a race. Knuckles was a little more out there with Treaure Hunting, but even so I felt he could run fast enough, and it made sense he could use his glide and climbing to get through the levels and find the shards. Amy actually made sense, her hammer was useful, although it could have been expanded on, and the basic idea of being chased and having to escape isn't that bad of one. In execution, it could have done with less tedious block puzzles. Gamma could still run fast, and could hover. Getting to the end of the level and destroying the target is a decent idea for a story from the perspective of one of Eggman's robots.

...But sitting down and fishing is not a gameplay style idea that I think works on any level. At all. It just doesn't make sense for a Sonic game. In execution I think it was done fairly well, I just don't think it should have been there even in concept.

I'm similar. Name just about any character and I'll find something to like about them. Tails? He's a fun genius with an adorable childish personality. Amy? She's a cute energetic girl who's always fun to play and I find great comic relief when things are getting too serious. Cream? An adorable little girl who despite her dislike of violence and being afraid of many things due to her age, she still won't hesitate to help her friends. Shadow? He's a complicated if sometimes misguided antihero who does his best to find himself, and he's even better after he resolves to put his past behind him after his game and who's now a stoic badass who'll help out when the chips are down. Silver? An innocent kid who has a good heart but trusts people too easily. I could go on and on.

[up][up]Amy's levels were okay, par the occasional tedium of some puzzles due to iffy controls. They also seemed the most elaborate levels after Sonic's, with the most unique pathways and obstacles according to the character playing them (even if she sadly only had three). The biggest problem she had was that she was actually slower than Big. Making her the mid point between him and Gamma speed wise would have likely fixed a lot of her gameplay.

I noticed most of Big's levels actually have some sort of minor puzzle in them, but are programmed in manner they are somewhat redundant (eg. Ice Cap, where you have to break the ice with a boulder to reach Froggy, only the rock is right beside you, and you can break the ice just by jumping on it anyway). It gives the idea that Big's were perhaps supposed to be more platform and puzzle-centric, but they dumbed it down later on, likely because the fishing itself was considered too tedius by many on it's own.

Most of the other side characters worked fine except their levels were way too short and easy (especially Knuckles and Gamma).

Sadly, big was such a problem for me when I first got it on the Dreamcast that I wasted over 5 days of beating everyone elses levels just so I couldn't get to the ending. Also, there was a similar Guide Dang It! when I first got Sonic and Knuckles as I never figured out that you had to link it with Sonic 3 to get the whole game, or even that there was a Sonic 3 in the first place. Also also, I could never for the life of me figure out how to get the Chaos Emeralds or even that you needed them until I spent weeks beating the teams only to be stuck at how to obtain them. So I never got the ending for that one either. Sorry, but those just really frustrated the crap out of me when I was younger and now I can't play any games at all since my vision loss.

I figure I might be able to play Sonic the Fighters with enough memorization as the gameplay's pretty simple though I have no idea how to run it on an emulator. Sorry, I'm stopping the bitching and moaning now.

Big's gameplay in SA 1 is probably among the worst in the entire franchise.

Truthfully I found some other styles like some in Next Gen more tedious. Big wasn't super exciting, but at least he had something new to him. A lot of other characters are just a slightly tweaked and crappier Sonic.

He had something new that didn't belong in the game at all. The others at least still revolved around core platforming somewhat, but Big? Nope. It was a dumb design decision that had no business being in.

Big's fishing wasn't the best idea at all, but I still feel he excelled at least a little over some other more tedious alternate gameplays.

Controversial opinion time!

I feel like Silver should be given another chance gameplay-wise. Don't get me wrong, his character has consistently annoyed me in everything I've seen him in (with the exception of the comics, though I honestly don't remember what my reaction to him in that was, that being my first exposure to him). But I feel like that psychokinesis gimmick, while odd and difficult to control non-spasmodically in 2006, could've been great if they'd taken the time to work out the kinks. If he ever shows up as a playable character again, hopefully they can do his gameplay right finally, because it seemed like it could've been really cool and fun.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.

Yeah, Silver's whole psychokinesis thing would work quite well for some sort of puzzle-platformer.

Funny thing? Silver was the most fun I had when playing Psychic-based characters. Not even Mewtwo in Melee was nearly as fun, honestly.(Pokemon doesn't count as you don't much "play" as the Pokemon... you just direct them to do something)

And he would've been better if he was more puzzled based, like Big had some intentions of being. Facing tons of enemies, while it can be fun at times(I won't lie), didn't work that well because of the those damn lasers.(atleast they don't take all your rings, but still) Facing Silver was annoying, but playing as him VS Sonic/Shadow... oh, that was great. XD

A polished version of his psy powers could work for, lets say, SA 3
