It's always really funny to me that Blaze was originally from another dimension then got retconned to be from the future, and Classic Sonic was originally from the past then got retconned to be from another dimension.

And then both got re-retconned into being from where they were originally said to be.

The Sonic the Hedgehog series is poorly written, folks, and the Broken Base is due to people liking the poor writing of some games, and Sonic Team still writing like crap with whatever hired writer they have that week. Forces is just a repeat of 06 crap again because someone on the staff didn't give a shit and just wanted the cool toys.

I'm playing Megaman X, so bad writing in these Japanese games is becoming understandable to me.

[up][up][up][up][up] The first thing I noticed was that the third line in Japanese explicitly refers to it being a dimensional thing, which would explain why the localization translates the earlier word that could - but doesn't necessarily have to - refer to dimensional stuff as definitely referring to dimensional stuff.

I swear, I honestly think making the 2 the exact same character was a huge mistake, especially since Superstars makes it pretty clear we're not done with Classic games. If Superstars Sonic really is the same Sonic that went through the Adventure games, then does he remember the emerald powers? Because if so, I gotta wonder why he never thought to compare them to Shadow's chaos powers. And the less I say about the change of eye color the better because I'd rather not get a headache trying to make sense of it.

"And the less I say about the change of eye color the better because I'd rather not get a headache trying to make sense of it."

Maybe that's just how hedgehog's work in this universe? Like how humans can be born with blue eyes but then have different coloured eyes when they're older, maybe younger hedgehogs (in the sonic universe) can have different coloured eyes to older hedgehogs, it's just that the eye colour lasts longer before it changes (so for Sonic, it would be black to green). This is just my bs handwave, there's no actual support for this as far as I know (but it's not too strange an assumption).

As for the general point of both sonics being the same, I understand your view but personally think it's better if they're the same. Yes it makes the series more of a continuity snarl (though to be fair the series already sort of is), but it also means that we're following the adventures of one character and those adventures can freely overlap and reference each other. And at this point, it would probably be more of a snarl to say modern and classic sonic are separate characters (given modern sonic makes frequent reference to classic events).

I'm reading the Twitter thread that Lalalei linked to, and wow, it is very interesting. One of the things they did was show the game to playtesters and get horrible review scores from them ("on a scale from 0 to 10, what do you think of this game?"). But as further changes and improvements to the game resulted in playtesters giving higher scores, this motivated the team to work harder, since it meant the game actually could get good enough for people to love it.

Once the non-Japanese players were giving the game scores of 8 and 9, that's when the team was really excited that they knew the game was coming together.

"If Superstars Sonic really is the same Sonic that went through the Adventure games, then does he remember the emerald powers?"

...can we consider the Twitter Takeovers canon? Because that actually was addressed in the most recent one (the island that Superstars takes place on has mysterious energies that enable the individual Emerald powers)

[up]As canon as anything in this franchise. More seriously, you can probably treat them as a case of canon until proven otherwise.

So, back with Sonic Frontiers. Is it true that the Sonic franchise would have ended if Sonic Frontiers wasn't a success or would they have replaced the current Sonic Team with someone else if the game had failed?

From what I'd heard, Sonic Team is simply the name given to whoever makes the Sonic games at the moment, unless they're outsourced.

It used to be the name of a division within Sega that also created Burning Rangers, Phantasy Star Online, and Nights Into Dreams.

But they later became nothing more than a brand name.

So who knows what would have happened. I suspect Sega might have decided to reduce the budget and importance of Sonic games, or focus on outsourcing, if Sonic Frontiers had flopped. After all, Sonic is still a popular character, and the success of his movies and cartoons shows that.

Sonic Team is a consistent team, but like in a Ship of Theseus way where they've slowly changed staff over time to where it's completely different now than when it started. But that's the norm for any video game development team or company that been around for decades, not like Sonic Team is special in that regard.

Sonic social media embracing the memes is probably one of the best things to happen for a franchise.

Which is weird, because in a lot of cases, companies doing that would be seen as cringey.

But I think Sonic has always had the right mix of cool and cheesiness that it fits.

In Sonic The Comic Sonic's eye colour change was explained as the side effects of being exposed to Chaos' Chaos energy. Did any other media give an explanation for Sonic's eyes changing colour?

I recall Archie giving one, but I cannot remember which was. Regardless, both Fleetway and Archie enter Voodo Shark territory here, as they explain why Sonic's eyes change, but not anyone else.

[up][up][up]There was an entire issue of Archie Sonic dedicated to just the eye colour change. Issue 71. Robo-Robotnik, who was not yet revealed at this point, shot some beam thingie at the planet from a satellite, and Sonic took a Super Emerald and ran around the planet really fast to stop the beam, somehow, while in the process he kept getting all these new super forms for a single panel, like Solar Sonic, Eco Sonic and Polar Sonic. I think he got hit with the beam too, but for reasons I don't fully understand, this didn't kill him. What it did do was give Sonic green eyes. Also, the issue started at the end with Sonic having green eyes, and then worked backwards to the start of the story. It may be the weirdest issue in the entire Archie run.

What would really shock me is if they announced a remake of Shadow's game... but instead of just a graphical overhaul, they tweak the gameplay to be kinda better and rewrite the script to ensure any narm is minimized.
