Currently the page is a mess of every possible way that you could mishear a song lyric. As there are large numbers of in universe examples on work pages and scattered in the examples, I propose we turn the page into an in universe page rather than just accumulating random song lyrics that some troper misheard.

Part of the problem may be that there is no real criteria given to define "famous" Mondegreens, as personal mondegreens are already supposed to be put on the Troper Tales page.

Let's definitely restrict it to In-Universe only. If people want to hear about every potential Mondegreen in existence, there's already links on the page to other resources.

It would also turn it into an objective trope for added bonus points.

I was going to say, this is a page ripe for a fun Troper Tales...but we have one already. I'm in favor.

I have no problem with leaving the Real Life examples to Troper Tales. Who wants to volunteer for the cleanup task?

What about mondegreens that don't appear in works, but are widespread enough that the original singer is aware of them and references them (e.g. "kiss this guy")? Do those stay?

[up] No, because there is no way that we can judge those. There is no standard where we can say this is well known enough. That's why the page has decayed so far. Unless you can find a work that uses the specific Mondegreen, it doesn't belong on the page.

Well, if it's referenced in other media—for example, if a documentary about Jimi Hendrix talks about the "kiss this guy" thing—it could be a Discussed or Conversed example listed under the title of the work making the reference.

We need to finish sorting this. How much do I have permission to chainsaw?

While we're on the topic, there's also a thread for the Troper Tales page. [1] Yes, there is definitely a fun Troper Tales page for this.

I would say famous examples would be limited to those mentioned by the media and/or those that have been referenced by the artists themselves (e.g.: "Kiss this guy" and "There's a bathroom on the right").

So basically, if it's not cited with a media that pointed it out, I can cut it?

This trope will be reworked to work on in-universe only examples, correct?

Then I have a problem I'd like to ask your opinion about: in the Mitsumete Knight character sheet, I long ago added a Mondegreen example in Wolfgario the Ravager's entry, and it's not an in-universe one.

I'm really stuck because of this single entry: I'd like to move all YMMV tropes in the page to the YMMV tab, but am not sure if I have to move this Mondegreen entry along with the other YMMV items, or simply eliminate it. What should I do?

Yep, in universe only. If it's not in universe, then it should be removed as a bad example same as any other bad example. The wiks are going to take a bit of clean up.

How much do I have permission to chainsaw?
As much permission as you want. Personal examples go in Troper Tales. I know There Is No Such Thing As Notability and all that but if it's not referenced in popular media, then it's not a well-known enough example to be on the main page. That's the only way to make it objective without cutting Real Life examples entirely.

Ok, so eliminating the example it is. Thanks for the answer, Shima.

[up][up] That sounds like a clear cut answer thank you. If it's listed as having been referenced in media it can stay. Otherwise it's going.

To be honest, while I'm fine with the example list being IU only, we should still allow OOU examples on the YMMW tabs of pages, they aren't hurting anyone there.

What about Mondegreens That have become Memetic Mutation? For example the Pokemon example of DENNIS!

[up] Those should be chainsawed with a passion because meme's are never as wide spread as the person spreading them thinks they are.

Memetic Mondegreen would probably stay on the Meme pages IMO.

Maybe a new subtrope for that (Example: Dissidia Final Fantasy's Exdeath has "Get the fruit!" when he actually says "Death approaches!" with sound effects of the spell at the same time or "Naive Weekly!" ("Naive weakling!") ect.... the guy has a lot of them and it comes up in the forum thread a lot.
