[up][up]No X items? Not very prepared.

I always carry 10 of each X item, because the occasions I use them are rare, but they're a game changer when I do.

I've never used them before, but I'm planning to use an X Speed in the Elite Four Blue fight if I play through again.

If I need to waste a turn with stat-boosting items, then the real problem is that I don't have enough levels.

Grinding everything up is boring. Using items lets you win at a lower level.

Yeah, you shouldn't have any problems. I mean, I swept them easily with level 55s, and I never even healed during any of the battles. I think I used a grand total of three super potions between fights.

Oh my god, it was horrible. Everyone's dead. Everyone is freaking dead!

Naw, just kidding, we totally won.

Lorelei

Most of Lorelei's pokemon are Water/Ice, so we sent Stan to dish out some Thunderbolts. Lapras survived a hit and managed to counter with Surf, then Lorelei used a couple of Full Restores to keep it alive. Stan finally got frustrated and tried to fry it with Thunder, but his aim was off. I managed to talk him out of his rage, and he finished the job with Double Kick.

The last pokemon was Jynx, an Ice/Psychic, but Hyacinth's Flamethrower made short work of it.

Bruno

Bruno's two Onixes went down easily with Trina's Low Kick, which is helped by that fact that they're really heavy pokemon, and Low Kick does more damage based on weight.

The Hitmonlee went down easily with Felicity's Drill Peck. Hitmonchan and Machamp both know Rock-type moves, however, and I didn't want to risk losing her in a rockslide. So I let Timothy deal with them. The plan was simple: Sleep Powder, then Sunny Day, then Solar Beam.

Hitmonchan survived the first hit, but with the sunny weather, Timothy doesn't need to spend a turn charging up and was able to spam Solarbeam to his heart's content. Ran into a bit of bad luck with Machamp, though, as the first two turns of Sleep Powder had no effect. Machamp managed to bulk up a good bit and put on a scary war face, but Timothy finally put it to sleep before it could do any damage.

Agatha

Since Felicity is half-Normal, Agatha's Ghost-type attacks can't hurt her. The first Gengar managed to hit with Confuse Ray, and then followed up with Double Team while Felicity fumbled around. She managed to get herself hurt on one of the arena pillars, but she was able to heal back some of the damage with the leftovers I gave her. Eventually she was able to fight through the confusion and finish off the Gengar with one last Drill Peck.

Golbat was no match for Stan's Thunderbolt. Intimidation didn't save Arbok from Trina's Earthquake, though its high-piched wailing managed to startle her for a moment. Meanwhile, Stan wears his sunglasses at night so he can Bite a Haunter for a one-hit KO and a level-up.

Felicity faced the final Gengar, falling to a Hypnosis after opening up with Drill Peck. She was safe from Nightmare, but I knew this Gengar had other moves at its disposal. I used Awakening instead of waiting for her to stir on her own, and she woke up to find a Sludge Bomb coming her way. It didn't do too much damage, though, and she finished the match with another Drill Peck.

Lance

Intimidate doesn't help Gyarados survive a Thunderbolt to the face.

Craig's stats are more defensive than offensive, doesn't get a STAB bonus, and doesn't have a held item for Ice moves, so he can't one-shot Lance's dragons with Ice Beam. (Surprisingly, even Dragonite survived, despite the double type-effectiveness.) But he's got good defensive stats, so even Dragonite's Outrage doesn't hurt him too badly. We did have to use Hyper Potion just to be safe, though.

Aerodactyl was agile and managed to strike first with Wing Attack, but Craig got him in one hit with Surf.

Gary

Stan vs. Pidgeot: Pidgeots are are fast, but Stan is faster, and one Thunderbolt was all it took.

Craig vs. Rhydon: Surf is boosted by Mystic Water and has the STAB bonus, and is super-effective against both of Rhydon's types. The poor bastard really didn't stand a chance.

Hyacinth vs. Venusaur: Hyacinth used Fire Blast, but Venusaur managed to sidestep the attack and spent the turn using Growth. But now the area was covered in flames, and a second Fire Blast landed a critical, knocking out the Venusaur in one hit.

Stan vs. Gyarados: Like with the Pidgeot, it went down in one hit.

Stan vs. Alakazam: Alakazam was tough enough to survive the first Bite, and with its last breath, it decided to forego trying to deal damage now and instead projected an attack into the future.

Craig vs. Arcanine: Now things get a little interesting. Arcanine uses Extremespeed to draw first blood, which is immediately followed up by Alakazam's Future Sight. Surf did heavy damage to the fire pokemon, but it miraculously survived with a sliver of health left. Gary kept trying to save it with Full Restore while Craig took it easy and just rode the waves, keeping the dog pinned down. After four turns of this, Craig decided to bring on the rain. Arcanine started to pound on the war turtle again with Extremespeed, and had to use Hyper Potion to bring Craig back to full health. But after that, one final Surf ended the round.

The round, the battle, and the journey. We've now defeated Gary for the final time and earned the title of League Champion!

Hall of Fame

Craig, the War Turtle (and Chick Magnet)
lv61 Blastoise
Relaxed nature
Met in Pallet Town at lv5
Ability: Torrent
Holding: Mystic Water
Moves: Surf, Rain Dance, Ice Beam, Protect
The best thing about Craig is that he can take a lot of punishment as well as dish it out in return, and that's pretty important in a Nuzlocke run.

Trina, the Tranquil Fury
lv62 Primeape
Quiet nature
Met in Route 22 at lv3
Ability: Vital Spirit
Holding: Leftovers
Moves: Low Kick, Strength, Cross Chop, Earthquake
You wouldn't expect a Primeape to be quiet, but that's just what Trina is. She specializes in taking down larger opponents, but sometimes has trouble with the littler guys.

Timothy, the Herbologist
lv60 Vileplume
Quirky nature
Met in Route 5 at lv13
Ability: Chlorophyll
Holding: Miracle Seed
Moves: Petal Dance, Sleep Powder, Solarbeam, Sunny Day
It's probably fair to say that he's The Smart Guy of the team, with tricks like Sleep Powder and the Solarbeam combo. Not to mention the plant trivia.

Felicity, the Aerial Ace
lv62 Fearow
Jolly nature
Met in Route 10 at lv16
Ability: Keen Eye
Holding: Leftovers
Moves: Drill Peck, Fly, Mirror Move, Leer
Considering how often we move from place to place, it's really nice to be able to ride a Fearow. I can't imagine playing without Fly, running around all the time would just be too darn tedious.

Stan, the Lightning Bruiser
lv61 Jolteon
Naive nature
Met in Celadon City at lv25
Ability: Volt Absorb
Holding: Black Glasses
Moves: Thunderbolt, Bite, Thunder, Double Kick
This guy is fast. He's the only team member with a stat in the 200's, the stat in question being Speed at 206. Pretty fitting for a lightning user, I suppose.

Hyacinth, the Dark Horse Pony
lv62 Rapidash
Quirky nature
Met in Mt. Ember at lv33
Ability: Flash Fire
Holding: Charcoal
Moves: Flamethrower, Stomp, Fire Blast, Bounce
She may not have been around for much of the game, but she's pretty important nonetheless. She's a good match against the team nemesis, Venusaur, and that counts for quite a bit, I think.

Retired

Zillian, the Fencer
lv26 Beedrill
Calm nature
Met in Viridian Forest at lv5
Ability: Swarm
Moves: Twineedle, Harden, Cut, Focus Energy
Even when she wasn't participating in battles anymore, she was still the resident Cutmaster. She also played a role in avenging Miranda, so that's something.

Giselle, the Temp
lv14 Pidgey
Serious nature
Met in Route 2 at lv3
Ability: Keen Eye
Moves: Gust, Sand Attack, Tackle, Quick Attack
Didn't really do much, actually. Sorry, Giselle.

Requiescat In Pace

Miranda, the Sly
lv19 Spearow
Impish nature
Met in Route 3 at lv6
Ability: Keen Eye
Moves: Peck, Growl, Fury Attack, Leer
Raised on bugs at Viridian Forest, and was the one to face Gary's Bulbasaur at Route 22. But she wasn't strong enough to defeat the evolved Ivysaur during the rematch at Cerulean City. We trained another Spearow, but it just wasn't the same.

Rochelle, the Rocksteady
lv31 Geodude
Careful nature
Met in Mt. Moon at lv. 8
Ability: Sturdy
Moves: Rock Blast, Rollout, Magnitude, Defense Curl
Single-handedly tackled Vermillion Gym, lost to Erica when we carelessly forgot that Grass severely hurts Rock/Ground.

Actually three deaths. But I never trained Sirius and he was never really part of the team, so it doesn't count. And technically isn't Gastly already kind of dead? tongue

How many deaths is normal for a Nuzlocke run anyway? I kind of thought you would be aiming for zero.

I just noticed that of the 9 evolutionary lines not available in Pokemon Yellow, 3 of them are Team Rocket's pokemon (Ekans, Koffing, Meowth). I wonder if that was intentional. It can't be coincidence that they removed all of Team Rocket's pokemon from the only game containing Jessie and James.

Part of the Team Rocket initiation is you selling all your pokemon, and then you get a new one. That's why every Rocket has the same 3-4 types of pokemon.

Of course I'm joking, you silly sausage.

That last run was super fun, so now we're starting a new one, this time in Pokemon Emerald. We're following the story of Duncan, a kid who's just moved into the town of Littleroot, but he won't be staying there for very long. Adventure awaits!

House Rules:

  • Capture rules kick in when we first get pokeballs. Any encounters before that aren't counted against us.
  • Strictly one pokemon per area, including gifts, trades, and starters. Area is defined as the location indicated on the pokemon's status page.
  • Gift pokemon and traded pokemon are fair game, as long as the above rule is maintained.
    • Though I probably won't do trades. Traded pokemon usually have crap nicknames that we can't change.

With that out of the way, let's get started!

After getting settled in, the first thing to do is talk to Professor Birch, one of dad's friends. So we pop over to his house, but apparently he's not around. We do get to meet Mrs. Birch, and then wander upstairs into what is apparently May's room. May stutters a bit when she speaks. Maybe she's not used to having a boy poking around in her room for no reason, so after introducing ourselves, we get on out of there. We're supposed to be looking for Professor Birch anyway.

He wasn't in the lab either, apparently he's out doing fieldwork. So we head on over to Route 101, and find him being chased by a Zigzagoon. We rummage through his bag and grab the first pokeball we find, and out comes a Mudkip to save the day. The Zigzagoon is subdued with a few crash-tackles, and the professor is saved. We go back to his lab, and as thanks for coming to his aid, he lets us keep the Mudkip, which we now call Steven.

Now that we have our very own pokemon, we're officially a pokemon trainer! The professor tells us to go visit May who's out on Route 103. We find her there studying the local pokemon. Like father, like daughter. She challenges us to a battle with our new pokemon, Mudkip versus Treecko.

Our Mudkip gained a few levels by fighting wild pokemon, so we have that in our favor. Also, he's learned Mud Slap, and even though it doesn't do much damage to the Grass-type Treecko, the blindness seems to be pretty effective. By the time we were through, the opposing pokemon was flailing about trying to hit Steven, to no avail.

After the battle, May leads us back to the lab, where Professor Birch decides to give us a Pokedex, and May, being ever so neighborly, gives us a couple of pokeballs so we can start capturing pokemon.

So we head out to Route 103 and catch ourselves a Wingull, Lori. She's another Water type, but she's also half Flying, which could help us fight Treecko in the future. Then, on Route 102, we end up with a Lotad, a Water/Grass pokemon.

Is fate trying to tell me to join Team Aqua? Because that's not going to happen.

As I start training my newly-formed team of pokemon, I notice that Steven tends to be a bit of a Leroy Jenkins. Something I'll have to rein in, lest his reckless confidence get him killed. Like carelessly deciding to challenge a Shroomish that actually knows Grass moves. He's lucky he didn't get seriously hurt.

We make our way to Petalburg City where we find Dad in the gym. We also meet Wally, and end up watching him as he captures a Ralts. (I'm kind of jealous about that.) After that, we head back to the gym. Dad wants us to get four gym badges before coming back to challenge him, so he points us toward Rustboro to challenge the first gym leader, Roxanne.

Current Team:
Steven, lv10 Mudkip, hasty
Lori, lv7 Wingull, brave
Rico, lv8 Lotad, sassy

I'm gonna skip ahead in my Nuzlocke to get past the boring parts.

After getting 7 badges and gaining a new team member (Ferris the Magnemite, who has already evolved into Magnezone), I went back to Veilstone to fight Team Plasma at their headquarters. After getting lost on the teleporters for a little while, I found Cyrus and beat him easily. Nicole did most of the work as usual. He disappeared after that, so I found commander Saturn, beat him and got him to tell me where Cyrus went.

We headed to mt. Coronet, and climed up to the Spear Pillar at the top. Commander Mars and Jupiter were waiting, along with Cyrus. The commanders challenged me to a two on one fight, but Barry arrived at the last second to get revenge for the beating he took earlier.

We fought two against two, and at first it went well. Nicole got confused by a Bronzong, but kept on fighting. Then Jupiter sent out her Skuntank. Nicole hurt herself in confusion, but still had a bit over half her health left so I thought she would be fine. Then Skuntank attacked, and got a critical hit with Poison Jab. Nicole was down. That's the first loss I've had so far.

I sent in Ferris to finish the job Nicole started, and we beat the commanders. Unfortunately, Cyrus had already summoned Palkia and Dialga. Then Giratina appeared from the shadows and opened a portal to the distortion world. Cyrus retreated into it, and I followed him- along with Cynthia, who arrived a bit too late to heal Nicole with one of her secretpotions.

We explored the distortion world a bit, getting lost repeatedly as we searched for Cyrus. Finally we found him and beat him. Now we just had to get back home. In order to do so, I challenged Giratina for our freedom. I won. We went home. Now the world is safe. I just wish Nicole had lived to see it.

I know that Team Galactic had two comments about how their lowest grunts don't have any Pokemon of their own (one complains about being demoted down to the lowest tier just before his promotion, and that he'd lose all his Pokemon. Another politely asks you to ignore him because he's the lowliest grunt who has no Pokemon, and ironically is the best guard in the entire series)

I guess he just stands there and doesn't let you in, no matter what you do because he doesn't have a mon to fight you.

Although from the games I actually played, the Best Guard position is held by the Valley Windworks guard: he does engage in a pokemon battle, but after losing he simply goes back inside and locks the door, leaving you outside. You have to beat the key out of a couple other grunts.

There are many guards that won't let you past until unrelated plot stuff, at which point they just disappear or move aside.

Off the top of my head for gen 1

  • Entrance to route 3
  • House in northwest Cerulean
  • Silph Co
  • Sabrina's Gym
  • Unknown dungeon

So about that progress on my FRO Wedlocke:

Warning! This post is going to be long.

I caught a male Mareep and a male Ralts which I named Seiryu and Metatron. After our first training session, Metatron picked up Jojo's Bizarre Adventure villain Funny Valentine's catchphrase: Dojya~~~n!

Oh and since I flipped coin to see which pairing I'd make: Male x Male, Male x Female and Female x Female. So by that logic Seiryu and Metatron are lovers.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

We were approached by a woman who gave us our third party member, Kibra the Treeko. She promptly swallowed a suicide pill. I freaked the hell out, I took Kibra's Pokeball and ran like a madman. I ran into the Viridian Forest like a bat out of hell and any trainer who saw me and challenged me got a "Fuck you!" or a "Eat a dick!". Any wild encounters were kicked out of the way.

Yes, I was the pinnacle of mental maturity.

I laid down for two weeks. Those two weeks helped me calmed down and allowed my team to rest. Seiryu and Metatron got a great bonding moment as I watched from afar. Metatron spotted me... and telepathically told me that I needed to get laid.

Dick.

Kibra questioned the relationship of the two aforementioned Pokemon so I plainly and bluntly told him: "Yeah, they're love with each other and if you have a problem with that then I won't hesitate to boot your ass into the PC."

He told me to calm down and that he was just curious.

After a good week of training, the three Pokemon were at level 20 and obviously the three Pokemon evolved. I was ready to kick ass and chew gum and I WASN'T out of gum.

I beat Brock's team bad. Metatron soloed Brock's team with ease... until his Onix confused Metatron with Swagger.

Metatron would have died if I didn't shout a certain battle cry which was...

WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Metatron snapped out confusion out of sheer anger and promptly channels so much psychic power that the Onix's head exploded.
