Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

You didn't like Spider-Monkey?

He was an excellent pun and harkened back to the golden age of comics, aka every time Hit-Monkey showed up.

If you don't like Mayday then I don't know whats wrong with you

He said all the fun Spider-MEN, not the fun Spider-Girls. Or monkeys. Or pigs. Or, you get the idea.

Also, for the love of all that's holy, don't kill the Spider-Man who fought crime unmasked with his dear dad Jonah Jameson in a Spider-Slayer suit.

When asked if Spider-Boy would appear in Spider-Verse, Dan Slott replied "Oh yeah, DC is going to let us do that, I'm sure. Let me call my DC contact right now.

Since Marvel and DC are now joined by nothing but their love of massacre, they should just team up already to make a Infinity Crisis Wars Where Marvel and DC Brutally Murder Each Other Holy Shit We Kill Everyone event.

We'll see who's laughing when all I read is Squirrel Girl, Ms Marvel and Rocket Raccoon

It'll be me laughing

because of the humor and lack of massacre in those comics.

On a funnier note, that is an extremely unflattering picture of Harry on the characters page thar.

@Hamburger Time: Part of the reason it's hard to avoid Replacement Scrappy status for Brand New Day and on love interests is that the primary message of OMD was never ever care about about Peter Parker's love life. Additionally, in comics new supporting characters tend to have a relatively short shelf life. While staple supporting characters can endure for generations, a lot of supporting characters tend to vanish completely when the writing team changes.

Also, people tend not to like being told that they are supposed to like a certain character when that character hasn't earned it. It works the same with villains, sure sometimes you get a big push villain that sticks like Venom, but a lot of the time you wind up with someone more like the second Doctor Octopus or Judas Traveler. A lot of the time you have a character where there is so much focus on making them "cool" they forget to give any real heart to them.

I think the only way you could have a new love interest work for Spider-Man now would be to either use an existing character that hasn't really been a love interest for Peter before, or introduce a new character, but not as a love interest. The former lets you use the existing material with the character to build on and comes with a preexisting fan base. The latter makes the journey feel like it's actually worth something and might be able to make people forget that we were blatantly told to never, ever care about Peter Parker's love life ever again.

I don't know how well their ages would match up and the being from different universes is a bit of a problem, but Spider-Gwen almost feels like the perfect Puzzle piece. You have a new character, but due to being a version of an old character you have a nice blend of something new and something nostalgic. There is plenty of reason for both to approach such a relationship with trepidation as there is both pain at what they lost and a sense that this isn't my Peter/Gwen and it lets you do a Peter has a love interest that also has Spider-Powers with a character people actually give a damn about.

[up] Agreed. I think a lot of writers want to show everyone their idea for a new character, but because they're so convinced it's a good idea, they forget to really "sell" the character, y'know? I don't think this is anything more than an honest mistake on the writers' part, though; after all, it must be exciting to introduce a new character.

I brought it up on reddit, and apparently was bashed over the head with the idea that Gwen was 16, and Pete was almost 30.

[up][up]I agree, it is usually an honest mistake. No one sets out to make Wesley Crusher. Sometimes people can even look back on a character that almost no one liked and manage to sell them even after the damage had been done. Two examples that spring to mind are Bashir from DS 9 and Kaine Parker. I don't think it's ever too late to sell a character, it's just harder when the initial pitch falls flat.

[up]Was a number missed, because it really doesn't make sense for Gwen to be 1.

[up][up][up] Yeah, a 30-year-old dating a teenager is skeevy and gross. So Peter and Spider-Gwen as a couple would definitely be a no-no. Besides, I'd much prefer Spider-Gwen's series be set in her own world. I want more of the Mary Janes!

[up][up][up] This phenomenon isn't limited to Love Interests; in the cosmic-scale stories I've observed a phenomenon I like to call "My omnipotent being could beat up your omnipotent being," which is just what it sounds like.

Why is it that in every universe other than 616 Peter knew Gwen and/or MJ in high school? Ultimate universe, both movie-verses, Spectacular Spider-Man, TV Ultimate Spider-Man, etc.

Part of the problem is that nobody wants to take the time to set up a love interest as a character first and foremost.

Gwen and Mary Jane were around forever before they got romantically involved with Peter. And the time scale of the comics back then wasn't as glacial.

@Son Of Sharknado: I think even OMD forgot that Peter met MJ in College as billionaire Peter referred to a woman he knew in high school. His only high school love interest was Betty Brant.

"Do you think there was ever anything....long term for us? A future?" Gwen asked awkwardly, stirring her coffee. "I mean, I know things worked out different in my timeline than yours, but...you know..." Peter looked around the coffee shop, which was thankfully almost empty, as he stalled on that question.

"I...I don't know." He finally said, sighing. "I mean after you, er, after she died, it took a long time for me to get over y-, uh, her. Now I just...try not to think about it." There was a long silence, punctuated only by slurps and the nibbling on biscotti.

"So, you killed me, huh?" Peter asked, knowing how bizarre the question sounded in his head. Gwen bit her lip, thinking back painfully.

"I had to..." She said softly. "You, he was The Lizard. He was going to kill a lot of people." Her eyes welled up suddenly, and she squeezed one hand on the table so hard it started to crack in tiny, web-like fractures. "I wish I knew what you knew about your Lizard, that I'd known how to save him..." Guilt washed over Peter for being so stupid as to even ask, and he reached a hand across the table to lay it on top of hers.

"Hey, hey." He said, squeezing her hand lightly. "It's okay. Like you said, you didn't know." He gave a small smile. "I always figured that if I didn't get bit by a spider, I might turn into a supervillain." Gwen smiled back.

"And maybe if I didn't get bitten, I'd be, God, I hope a scientist or something. I don't think I'd look too good green." They laughed for a little, a nervous laugh, but still genuine. There was another silence. Suddenly, Gwen started leaning towards Peter. Not entirely sure why, but unable to stop himself, Peter leaned in, too.

Then, just off in the distance, something exploded. Gwen and Peter pulled away from each other, faces red as they reached into their clothes for their masks, bolting out the door. "Probably Shocker." Peter said as he pulled on his mask, checking his web shooters as he yanked them out of his backpack.

"Yours or mine?" Gwen asked, already working her way up the nearest wall.

"Which one's less lame?" Peter replied, and they laughed again, swinging down the street.

Now, I wrote this before the similar reaction between the two in Spider-Verse.
