I don't really have strong opinions on Zero's plot, I just hate its gameplay and controls.

If it means that Assault is no longer part of continuity I'll be disappointed, though, it's my fav.

[up] Assault is indeed the greatest. I'm super sad that my GCN controller doesn't work well anymore and my disc just randomly started fucking up.

As for Zero, I liked it. I was going through some serious issues when I rented it (my meds were doing so really bad things to my mind) so I couldn't beat it but I enjoyed it. The changes to the plot and the expansion of the setting was pretty cool. I wouldn't mind seeing either a Zero 2 to see how they introduce Krystal (the guy at Platinum who headed the project mentioned wanting her to be in the game if they made a sequel) or seeing a sequel to Assault that completely boots Command out of continuity.

I felt that Assault was a little too dark out of nowhere (space Borg butterflies will do that), though it was a bold attempt and not entirely a bad one. The gameplay was a lot of fun too. I really should grab Zero, though I don't have a Wii U anymore.

I hate to ask since I feel like it might catalyze a slapfight, but was I the only one who liked Adventures? I really enjoyed it but the general opinion seems to be pretty negative.

It's been fun.

Oh, I greatly enjoyed it. The game's biggest problem is simply the fact that it has absolutely no replay value. After you've beaten it, playing it again is really boring unless it's been several years and you don't remember anything.

I actually wish Assault had been a little bit bolder about messing with the status quo. Imagine if they actually did kill Peppy off there? We'd be without our barrel-roller in subsequent games but it'd make that scene a lot more impactful.

I like the shake-ups it did with the Star Wolf roster, though.

I'm hoping they continue with the Zero reboot, because I really liked the additions to the story in that one. I also really liked the controls, but, uh... A more traditional control scheme as an option would be great, because honestly that type of control scheme shouldn't be forced. Not everyone will 'get' it, and the insistence on it being the only control scheme hurt the game.

I've... Never played Adventures or Assault actually, but I'd like to. I've got Assault buried somewhere. I should dig it up.

Not sure I care to play Command, though. Is it worth a look?

I hear Command was good, but that the story was kind of all over the place, or something? Never did play it.

Command should stay its own thing, the story can go all over the place depending on the route.

After playing Zero, I'd think Command became vindicated in my eyes. Using the stylus for all-range mode sure beats the hell out of gyro controls.

Gameplay wise, Command is... okay. It's not terribly great but it's not terribly bad, either. However, it gets old really quick since there's only, like, three mission types but hundreds of missions.

Story wise, Command starts of really horrible and doesn't really get better. A couple of the endings are kinda great, though (like Fox and Falco retiring to becoming FG-Zero racers).

My recommendation is to just look at it. Maybe check out some gameplay videos of a Let's Play.

I'll be honest, the gyro controls do not make me want to play Zero at all. Sure, cool idea and all, but what the hell was wrong with the analog stick you made all-range mode specifically to show off?

If I get the game I'm gonna keep a running tally of how many times I kill myself due to the gyro suddenly stopping tracking like in Splatoon.

It's been fun.

You can hit the Y button to re-calibrate the cursor in Zero.

I actually like Zero. Only thing I didn't like was the Gyrowing.

You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!

Command is one of those games that is just baffling. The gameplay is okay, for a couple playthroughs, but it gets repetitive after a while doing what seems like the same mission. But Command just inserts a lot of character traits out of nowhere. Like I said, why does Peppy have a daughter? How is it that Pigma barely survived as a Rubix Cube, while Oikinney survives without a scratch on him? Why does Panther speak in third person, and why is Katt designed like a siamese cat and not pink like in Star Fox 64? Never explained! It's like if they only had some pictures and a sentence worth of character bio, and just put in a bunch of random stuff. It's strange because Dylan Cuthbert worked on the original Star Fox, so you'd think he'd pay more attention to character design and personalities.

I know that not all of the characters didn't have much personality, but there are better ways to give them character and make the story good, and this game doesn't do it. I wouldn't even mind the team separating if the idea is that work has been slow since the aperoid attack, and they need to either retire or find work in the army, and not all of this soap opera fanfiction.

Finally, the choose your adventure format doesn't work in a main series franchise, at least without a true ending, which is why the main timeline just stopped. The format only works in standalone games like Catherine or Stories: Path of Destinies, where there hasn't been an already established world or characters and it's easy to project yourself doing these choices. If Star Fox Command had completly new characters and didn't have the old cast sort of like Yu-Gi-Oh or Digimon, that'd be one thing, but to change characters that we have grown to like into something unrecognizable seems a little insulting.

I wonder if Zero would do well on the Switch, with normal-ass controls.

I haven't played the game myself, but as Anomalocaris said, I hope Adventures and Assault are still canon. Krystal happens to be my favorite Star Fox character. B-But not for the reason you think! I just happen to be a really big fan of Rare and would hate to see their characters phased out of the broader Nintendo canon/pantheon. It's bad enough that King K. Rool is AWOL.

I may have said it before, but I'll say it again.

Zero did the opposite of what fans wanted from the franchise. We needed a game with the same kind of gameplay as 64 but with a fresh story, not the same story with the kind of gameplay nobody asked for.

Zero couldn't work on the Switch. The entire game was designed with the control scheme in mind so you'd have to remake the entire game basically from scratch in order to get it to work on the Switch. Nintendo and Platinum's time is better spent on other projects.

[up][up] Exactly. The fans who wanted something different aren't going to like the fact that it's a remake and the fans who wanted the gameplay to be like Star Fox 64 are going to be put off by the motion controls.

I'll say that the characters have really nifty designs in Zero, though. It's the best they've ever looked.

I like how Zero incorporated the scouters Fox and Falco had in Brawl into their designs and actually gave them a cool reason for existing. It also made me really want a CG Star Fox anime.

If they ever did make a Star Fox anime I'd bet real money that Slippy would go from the least useful character to the most useful. In the games he's canonically the worst pilot of the bunch, and all he can do is scan a boss's health bar. But in an anime it'd be all "Hey this new bio-weapon is impervious to our weapons!" "Don't worry guys, I'm a technician, I can design a new weapon to take this thing out." "Hey, it worked! Now the bio-weapon is dead!"

I'm probably the only one who doesn't like the character designs in Zero, at least in practice. In the promotional art, the fur looks a bit overdone. They look even worse with cel-shading in that animated short. It would've been better if the characters are in CGI whenever there's excessive movement in the action scenes, and then are in 2D hand drawn animation during the scenes where animation isn't too hard. When you look at the background characters in that short, they are hand drawn and look decent. Why couldn't the Star Fox crew look like that during the less action heavy scenes?

Yeah, let's get a [awesome] for Raining Metal. Even with new gameplay, at least keep the general feel; I'd have been alright with a reboot if it had done some interesting stuff with the story for a reboot.

I mean, come on, Nintendo, it's not like Star Fox had a lot of story canon anyway. Give us something solid to work with... though really, Metroid and Mario and all the other franchises don't have story canon either, just persistent world and character tropes.

It's been fun.

Falco is brash and cocky. Peppy is experienced and fatherly. Slippy often bites off more than he can chew but is a valuable technician. What about Miyu and Fay? What are they like?

wild mass guess Miyu is tall, athletic, calm, and a tomboy, Fay is short, academic-smart, and enthusiastic.
