Egypt is currently taking up the air time, so none of the networks have covered it, but a member of the US consulate in Lahore was driving when two Pakistanis on a motorcycle went toward him, allegedly with weapons. He shot and killed them, and was then arrested.

Needless to say, it ain't doing too well for their sentiment toward Americans.

Well, is there a good source for this? Is there going to be a proper investigation? 'Cos it sounds too...extreme to be true.

In addition, Rana said, a car from the U.S. consulate was involved in an accident that killed a motorcyclist while it was en route to the police station in response to the shooting incident.

I read a confirmation that the bodies of the two on the motorcycle did in fact have weapons on them, at least one was a submachinegun.

That's a very popular assassination technique that I've seen reports of several times in Pakistan.. Roll up to a car in a motorcycle at point blank, ice the target, then drop the gun if you have gloves, or tuck it back in the jacket and drive off through traffic. Motorcycle Helmet assures anonymity.

Now that just leaves the question of why they'd want to kill a US Consul- no wait never mind

I think at nearly every point in the last 100 years someone out there has had the motivation to do so.

Lol Americans should get the heck outta Pakistan. The only problem is that the Americans are determined to steal the uranium from out under their noses to prevent millitants from getting their hands on it.

Pakistan is playing some crazy game of extortion by having this unending threat loomin of militants ande nuclear weapons.

It's a good thing then that UF Os apparently hover around nuclear missile silos and prevent them from launching. And no this isn't from A Lex Jones charzies but from actual service men who say the UF Os disable their equipment.

The mild speculation that the man was possibly CIA makes me wonder, even if Langley gave a denial.

While I'm glad the man survived the attempted robbery, the term "wrong man, wrong place, wrong time" comes to mind. He'll get deported at the very least. But only if the Obama administration can twist Pakistan's arm enough to get them off their blood lust. Considering the record for things like the War on Terror in Waziristan, I doubt it.

He defends himself from two attackers and gets arrested?

I don't see anything morally ambiguous here. If what Barkey says is true, and one of them had a submachine gun, then this was defence against a blatant attack.

Whats the problem here?

EDIT: On second thoughts, those small arms could have been planted after a panicked shooting on two motorcyclists mistaken for assassins. And just why did the official have a gun on him in the first place? These are all good questions. The official may simply have thought, of course, that carrying a weapon and getting arrested is better than not carrying one and being shot.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

He's an official in a country that has assassinations on decent basis, why wouldn't he be carrying?

Fight smart, not fair.

The third man that was killed was an innocent bystander that was run down by his car after he tried to escape the scene though. Add to the fact that he was not licensed by Pakistan to carry a gun (which even the Embassy admitted was a grey area) and the ambigouity surrounding his job, he'll be toast.

The Government will probably pull some strings and he'll just get sent either back home or to a different consulate.

I dunno. The mood in Pakistan is as such that such an action like that might do more harm than good. If the American gets off (in their eyes) "scot free", they'll likely sack the consulate, if not the Embassy. We'd have another Iran on our hands. Its already oh so close.

It's kinda understandable that he'd opt to be armed, but managing to kill them both.. well, it doesn't seem very diplomatic. This rings of the first falling domino to me  *

, I hope I'm wrong.

When someone is shooting at you, would you be thinking about being diplomatic?

[up] To be pedantic (which is one of my favorite things to do), they weren't shooting at him, just pointing guns at him. Same difference, as far as provocation goes, but it's always important to nit-pick.

Meh, to anyone with combat training, or at least self-defense training, there's no difference between pointing a gun and shooting it, since the rule is you never point a gun at something you don't wish to kill or destroy.

If anyone is pointing a gun at you, then you are to immediately respond as if they are shooting at you, and shoot them back.
