I'm this close to downloading the game. How is it?

It was kind of boring to me: there's just one hub and an endless dungeon. Go into the dungeon, reach a checkpoint, return to hub, buy new weapon, finish quests, repeat.

Hell, that's just like Diablo 1.

Yes. Torchlight is pretty much the same as Diablo. Base your choice on whether or not you liked Diablo 1&2.

I liked Diablo 1's atmosphere.

Oh. I was talking gameplay. The atmosphere is definitely similar, but still not the same.

If you like hack-and-slashers, and even the Diablo series (same creators in fact), I'm sure you'll enjoy this. Repetitive? Sure, but the time that I got to play it, I was rather hooked.

Also, I am looking forward to the sequel, with multiplayer capabilities this time.

I'd definitely buy it. The gameplay's extremely polished, and the art style manages to be cartoony and adorable yet a bit gloomy at the same time. I've easily spent more time on this than diablo 2.

Bit of a necro, but oh well. Got this game yesterday by pre-ordering Torchlight 2. Absolutely love it. Playing it on normal, which is just difficult enough to give me a challenge, but not mind-crushingly hard. Currently running through with the melee build (forget the name at the moment) and finding myself glad that I hoarded so many big health potions. Definitely gets tougher the further down you go.

I guess we could go... wherever we please.

Destroyerrrrrrr!

Despite the fact that I will be comatose at the end of the week from Diablo 3, I'm actually also looking forward to Torchlight 2 being released.

I've actually started playing again in prep for diablo 3, trying to get back in the hack and slash mindset

I'm reminded why i stopped plying my summoner: no pet icons at the top like in Diablo 2 makes it annoying as hell to keep your imps up.

On the plus side, I went back to my vanquisher, and I'm very much enjoying that. Gogo explosive shot!

Man, [spoiler: Ordrak]] is NASTY with Destroyer. Seriously, I can barely scratch the guy, and with his regen he just heals it all up. Should probably go train some more, since I'm still only level 30 or so. Maybe I'll get lucky and find the rest of the Dragonslayer set.

I guess we could go... wherever we please.

Only level 30? I was playing through it on normal (as the summoner) recently and ended up at ~level 36 on my first/only playthrough. I don't remember going out of my way to grind, just cleared out every level/floor (going back to the city before moving on to the next floor for the extra "boss" quest the robot gives out), completed every Phase-beast portal I ran across, completed all the "separated dungeon" quests, and completed every special map that the wizard gave out. I think I only bought one extra map the entire time and that was early on to see what it did.

The fact that the additional portal-floors (the non-plot ones) had monsters your own level no matter when you entered them and that I did not complete most of them till just before the next boss fight probably didn't hurt. Even so, I had to corpse-run a few times before I finally killed Ordrack.

@ Ordrack: he doesn't automatically regenerate his health, he kills off all the adds and gets health from the Dragonkin. Kite/kill a number of them and you should be able to win... eventually.

On end-game content, I have a couple of questions:

  • Is the crypt worth it?
    • if "yes," should I be completing the fetch quests?
  • Will the items in the "shared account" chest be destroyed if I chose to become an ancestor/leave an heirloom?
    • I put just about every "set" and "Legionary" piece of equipment I am not using in there.

That's what I meant by his regen. I'm just barely able to scratch him. Should probably finish off the portal and Wizard quests, then. That should hopefully boost my level a bit.

I used the big guy to defeat the boss the first time and had no trouble at all. It probably helps that I did every quest as I was given them. I don't remember what level I was though. :/

Ordrak has an unfortunately HUGE amount of health. it may be that your attacks look like they aren't doing much but in actuality they are it's just he has a massive health pool to soak it up.

And yet I took him out in less than a minute. Go get more powerful weapons.

My current weapon is doing around 700 damage. I'm unlikely to get more powerful stuff at this point. Especially since the blacksmith is being uncooperative.

And you were the big guy, yeah? I'll have a look at the game when I get home to remind me which attack I used.

A related question: one weapon in each hand, a weapon and a shield, or one two-handed weapon?

Okay, I just looked up my character, and here's what I had for the final boss:

The attack I constantly used: Devastate (with two melee weapons in hand)

I was probably around level 35-40.

Each of my weapons probably did somewhere near 5-600 dps, not including Devastate's bonuses.

.

Of course, now I'm level 48, and each of my weapons do around 700 damage each. Still use Devastate all the time though.

After chugging more health potions than most people have in a single playhtrough, I took down Ordrak. Also decided to play around with a couple of mods, specifically the "no risk of disenchantment" and "Item Overhaul" ones. Now I'm mostly getting gold or pink stuff, which is nice.

I guess we could go... wherever we please.

I suspect there is a reason why the No-Enchantment-Failure mod has the top spot on almost all torchlight websites.
