If I want to use expies of tropers as characters, I should ask them, right? Even if they don't have the same name and some of them are gender flipped?

I actually have many shout outs to various tropers, some of them very easy to spot.

I once wrote a Mirror Universe fanfic based on the members of a forum I frequent. From my experience most people feel honored if you base your characters on them. The rest just don't care. You should let them know, however.

I've asked most tropers I'm including in my Alternate History, as with other people from other forums in it.

Don't use people whole-cloth, pick and choose their characteristics and experiences to flesh out your characters. I bet you have some friends who've had strange or funny hijinks in the past; ask about them and if those experiences can flesh out your stories.

But if memory serves, not all of those are characters, and you created a megathread in Yack Fest to ask about who was interested.

I don't think anyone would mind, they would just like to be informed about it if you did. Personaly I wouldn't have a problem if you used me without asking, but I think it's obvious that you should ask people for that. You know, the necessary politeness.

On another note, if you were going to gender flip some of those characters for more shipping and love dodecahedron options, should you ask them if its okay first? Just in case they might be offended.

The sheer amount of shit in the Troper Shipping thread makes me highly doubt it matters much.

If people learned from their mistakes, there wouldn't be this thing called bad habits.

I think most people won't be offended, as no one would ever take your story seriously enough. Unless you actually have a grudge against somebody and they know it, it shouldn't be a problem.

I hope something I do inspires an author, be it a good or a bad thing.

I'm feeling strangely happy now, contented and serene. Oh don't you see, finally I'll be, somewhere that's green...

Now I'm curious who I'm berthing with, in the shippers' minds.

I probably shouldn't be.

It would be so cool to have a character based on me. Not that I'm suggesting anything...

[down] True... it could be frightening. But then I'd get the answer on what people think of me grin

@Pixie bait: I'd almost be afraid to see what Tropers would do with my online self. Almost but not quite. [lol]

Yeah, for some tropers, I use them as bases, not themselves (or at least, their internet personas)
