-Engi isn’t a typical Japanese name, it’s a word -Calling her Threepiece Engi would be retarded -The fact that she says, “Let the rehearsal begin!” when she opens the dream gate would make no sense
I assumed that people who grasp enough Japaneseto tell that the character is named Engi but not enough to avoid subs altogether would be able to make use of the translation to understand the pun/reference to a performance/act/PLAY.
Let it go. I know everyone’s upset because instead of vagina bones, we had some sort of bloated gummy Merry belly this episode.
EVERY
延喜 演義 縁記 = Engi as names ლ(╹◡╹ლ)
>演義 縁記 = Engi as names
Which is why I covered my ass by saying “typical Japanese name.” And by ‘typical’ of course I mean some anime/manga writer decided to let me know it exists by using it to name an important character in a recent work.
If a name with kanji popped up I probably wouldn’t have translated it. Fortunately dream demon names are all in katakana, because they’re, um, foreigners I guess.
Hahahah vagina bones wut?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersDumb meme from 4chan. Some idiot on /a/ referred to Merry's visible hip lines as "vagina bones", and after everybody was done making fun of him it became a running joke in Merry threads.
And I don't buy the idea that because engi is a word in Japanese, it needs to be translated. Granted, if you do the strict transliteration you wind up losing the pun, but doesn't the fact that the name is in katakana indicate that this is the preferred pronunciation? Herakles' first name is given in kanji, but it too has katakana beside it indicating that it is to be pronounced "Pharos".

Fucking memes, how do they work?
Forever liveblogging the Avengers^^^^Wait, what? Confusing copypasta is confusing.
Anyway, the fact that Engi is her name is why it's a pun. Besides, even if someone's name means something, you don't translate it - imagine if, say, Nobuyuki Hiyama was credited in English as Thisdiscipline Cedarmountain. It'd be silly.
It's been fun.AGH I hate that stupid joke. It needs to die.
This is what confused me about Princess Tutu. I get that "Ahiru" is meant to be a pun, but was it necessary to translate her name in English?
As for the translation: if Engi's name is written in katakana, which is what I've surmised from the thread, then it really shouldn't have been translated, IMO. Hell, it's not like it's too hard to do a translator's note.
^I'm not familiar with the series. How'd they translate her name? Duck?
Exactly. You don't translate names. Titles, yes; epithets, sometimes, and at least provide a note for those. But not names.
It's been fun.Yep. It's really, really jarring. And I pretty much agree with you on the translating thing.
AWESOME news. Somebody at Sentai (The Studio Formerly Known As ADV) must really like it if they're willing to chance it this frigging early.
On the other hand, this means at least one of the fansubbers is going to drop the show citing copyright worries.
...Damn it, I know they're probably going to do a dub. I wonder which voice actors they're going to get.

Some interesting stuff in this episode! I'm glad Engi wasn't killed, and it seems we have our Big Bad - or two. Also, what're the odds that two characters (Well okay, a character and a chainsaw) named after Mistilteinn would show up in shows airing in the same season?
Also: this was the first episode that I noticed Yanagi's eyes are completely black. Foreshadowing? No, couldn't be, not with those cuts of him interspersed with Chaser's descriptions of a badass who could go toe-to-toe with Elcres.
Merry needs another title now that we've seen her Limit Break, by the way.

It's been fun.More like her nonsensical title will suddenly make a lot of sense. It is the name of the show after all.
Isn't it fun when nicknames that originally had nothing to do with anything now directly relate to something?
Well, she still doesn't eat dreams. Now she just keys them to death.
It's been fun.[1]◊ [2]◊ GD just count the Fetish Fuel Tropes...
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Thats why I called Chaser John Deeeeeeeeeeeeew a pimp earlier.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers-Waits for KSPAM to post-
Chaser John Doe was pretty nice this episode... I just love the way he speaks.
Also in the world of anime male leads I find Yumeji to be quite likable to the moment. He's just... I don't know charming?
If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything. Not a wishy-washy useless male lead only put in so that the male viewers would have someone to relate to?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI wonder....
I knew I heard that voice before! He's the one who voiced Peterhausen of Ichiban Ushiro No Daimaou!
Yeah, Yumeji's actually a decent protagonist. Yumeji and Ayumu (since Kujo doesn't really count, I think)... this season has done a pretty good job of avoiding This Loser Is You for its male leads, at least in the shows I watch.
It's been fun.I have to agree with you, this season seems good in that regard. Though, Kujo hasn't rubbed me off in a bad way either...
If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.Kujo's a decent guy, come to think of it. He and Victorique are one of the few oblivious guy/tsundere couples I actually like (another, topically enough, being Yumeji and Merry).
It's been fun.Bah, doublepost, but whatever.
Okay, so going by the new header up at Anilinkz... when is the Beach Episode airing, again? For research purposes?
It's been fun.Yumeji doesn't strike me as the "oblivious" type. It's entirely possible that there's a mutual attraction, but he places a higher priority on helping Merry get some answers to her questions.
I think there was a point where I translated "Fuzakeruna!!" as "FUCK OFF!!" Given that it was written in the biggest font they used, I think it's a fairly accurate interpretation.
