Instills great hope? I'd say that goes for most RPG protagonists. If you want an example, Paragon Commander Shepard. He's able to get people to go through hell and back with him. Some of them twice, even.
Great compassion... John Marston, maybe? I have no clue about that one...
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."Hope: Captain Vyse
These are both really common themes in game protagonists?
For compassion: Ico?
A character that instills great hope...I would say the main character from ZHP. He is a weak bystander who just happens to acquire the Unlosing Ranger title when the first Unlosing Ranger is killed in front of him. He has outstanding amounts of willpower; he takes fatal blows from the Big Bad about 10 times and just keeps getting back up again. He improves the lives of about a dozen people, teaching them to believe in themselves, each other, and the power of hope. And at the end of the day, he ends up defeating Darkdeath Evilman and saving the world.
And all without saying a word.
For a reference. He's the guy in the middle.◊

Come to think of it, Sonic fulfills both requirements quite well.
Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows.Hope: Gordon Freeman.
Compassion: Flonne.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."I'm going to have to give another vote for Unlosing Ranger for instilling hope and Flonne for compassion.
"Only now, after being besieged by a flock of talking ponies, did he really understand what he'd lost. "Another vote for Gordon Freeman. Hell, the only thing we even know about him is that he fills people with hope.
Compassion? More difficult. Game heroes tend not be compassionate guys (Or girls).
Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.While I second (Third? fourth?) the vote for Gordon Freeman, I'd nominate Welkin Gunther as fulfilling both criteria.
I'm not a Pokemon Trainer, you zetta sons of digits!Oooh, I like Freeman for hope. I think I'll use that.
So far, I like Amaterasu for compassion.
Looking back at it, I thought "we so need a 'HOPE' picture of Gordon." Turns out, it exists.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Hope: Whoever that guy from Just Cause 2 is. It might be criminals and terrorists that he is filling with hope, but it's hope nonetheless!
Compassion: Xenomorphs from Av P games / movies. They love their Mummy. :3
Compassion: Dammit, this is hard.
Red from the original Pokemon game is supposed to be an example, but it's only shown in the final scene with Professor Oak.
Samus is an example (Or at least kind to animals), but she doesn't look very compassionate in her armor.
There's a ton of RPG heroes who fit. Maybe someone from Mother?
Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.^ You could express it with her being cute at Pikachu and/or the baby Metroid. Like, tummyrubs or whatever the equivalent on a floating space jellyfish would be.
The only character I could think of fitting one of the criteria listed is Colette Brunel.
Other than that, I'm seconding Gordon Freeman.
And the Just Cause guy is Rico Rodriguez.
Shutdown sequence initiated. So, did this drawing end up being made? Can we see the result?
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Compassionate: Duh. Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza. Look at him◊. The man runs an [1].

Hmmm, I'd say that Zero from the Megaman Zero series fits for the 'hope' thing.
Ike from Fire Emblem Tellius would do a good job for 'compassion'.
Out of interest, what was this drawing for?
So I have this idea for a drawing I want to do, but there's a stumbling block.
I need two video game characters who fit very specific requirements.
A character who instills great hope and a character who has great compassion in their hearts.
I can't really think of any who fit these guidelines...could you all help out?
Oh, and the one who instills hope can be one who instills it in the other characters in the game, or in the player themselves.
