The last planet in existance is a planet called Hope. Upon this tiny world is a small lake that surrounds a tiny island. There is a small mountain range surrounding a tiny forest in which the house of a young girl named Susan lives. She is the protector of this tiny wonder and has fought against the darkness that swallowed up the rest of the universe. Her life is a lonely one and yet she works hard to restore the universe to what it once was.

So every hour the sun is visible, Susan uses her slingshot to fire one small rock no larger than a grain of sand into the blinding light in the hopes that she can break her sun and let it release all of its energy in one giant bang. It will destroy both her and her world but the universe will be able to exist once more. And so she perseveres hour after hour, day after day, year after year with no signs of stopping until she can finally break her sun...

I wrote this one on a whim and decided to post it anyway. Hope you enjoy this mishmash of a story!

She hopes to break the sun with a grain of sand?

Is this like that story where the bird wipes its' beak on the mountain once a year?

I enjoyed the story, but... What does it mean? Is it just random, or what? Great, this is gonna bug me all day now.

The story actually grew out of a post that was originally going to be put into World Building but eventually a story started to form after I realized that Little Susan would be very lonely and an idea that her world was all that was left of the universe. So it came about at random yet started to get more focused and ends with a little bit of hope.

Also, I've never heard the one about the raven rubbing its beak against a mountain.

The raven wiping its beak story goes something like this.

'One day, there was a huge mountain, standing hundreds of miles tall in the air.

And, on the opposite side of the world, there lived a raven.

Once a year, this raven wold begin an arduos journey to the other side of the world.

Once he reaches there, he wipes his beak- just once. And then, he flies back home.

It is said that, when the raven reduced this mountain to a pebble, the universe began.'

For the benefit of anyone who has never heard a variation of this tale.

So, basically every single sci-fi movie/novel set 20 Minutes into the Future is speculation of what would happen if the raven wasn't so damn lazy?  *

Just think of what we could have done if we had all that extra time to do things... What a jerk!

As for the story, ehh. It was interesting, but it was waaaay to short for my tastes. However, it's a nice idea. I'd like to see it made into a real book.

I've heard the same story but with the last line being "The first second of eternity passes".

I love the premise, Sand Josieph. It's superbly written. It sounds like this is going to be a goofy story.
