Weeell, more like 'the battle system is designed to work agaisnt you'. Stupid evasion glitch, stupid turf system, stupid overpriced shops, stupid cheating FLYING bosses (only 2, but still) Wait wait, it will seem like I HATE the game! No, I liked the Grandia-type arte learning, more Mystic Artes per char, regenerating TP... and the world map music is VERY earwormy. (Ah! I am humming it right now!) And of course, the characters and their interactions.
We played LOTS of Xillia! Warning, this post is gonna become LOOONG.
We jump through Kanbalar's rooftops to reach their castle's courtyard then use wyverns to fly up to an Exodus battleship with the intent of stealing it and reach their homebase. Ivar arrives, falls on his head (even the goons sweatdrop.) and helps by taking over the bridge (with exciting Spiderman wallcrawl action.) he pushes the wrong button and makes us fight a pair of tanks, but no biggie.
Back at the castle, preparing to invade the Zenethra. As Milla we go to the main hall and spy Agria picking on Leia (nurse motivations again... and blurting that 'your boy has the hots for Maxwell, so TOO BAD, pimples'.) and Alvin picking UP Presa ('Do not think you can flirt your way back into my life'.) Outside, Milla talks with Jude and then with Muzet. She reassures the blonde that 'you are Maxwell' but she is starting to doubt something that seemed simple...
Zenethra battleship! We know how it goes, we arrive at Gilland's door pretty fast. Celsius falls to Jude's fiery punches and Gilly is down almost inmediately after. Spyrites are Elympios' hope, blah blah. GRAVITY WELL OUT OF NOWHERE, Milla activates the Lance to dispel it and the Schism... but does not work. And then... is MILLA DIES a meme yet?
Here it is, the reason to be playing Milla Route: the Spirit World. The Great Four take Milla there, where she has a fanservicey green Zero Suit (You can't have her running around naked!) We explore the spiritual plane, identical to the real world. We landed on Kijara Seafalls, where the Four are concerned that Milla became sort of ammesiac. Efreet is tough and brave, Undine is motherly and caring, Gnome is the childish pet and Sylph is... now that I see her up close, she is a loli on short shorts and aviator jacket + googles (and a tsundere snarker!)
Spirit Hamil. We could go to Spirit Nia Khera, but there is only a bunch of women blocking our pass. Yeah, the spirits actually look like people in this world! We expected more... spectral beings. The NPC say that someone was reincarnated in a wrong way, and that the cycle of souls should not be tampered with. We see monsters, Efreet volunteers to dispatch them. Exodus goons use spyrix and KILL a spirit girl and woman right there (so that's how it looks like for them! This is the point in Jude Route where he and Leia were attacked, so of course.) Milla tries to touch their fossils, but can't from this plane. Then to Spirit Aladhi Port, some male spirits haunt a sole spirit woman. Efreet gives them a piece of his mind and they leave her. We learn that Muzet is looking for that wrongly reincarnated soul in Spirit Nia Khera. The Great Four tell us the truth: they wanted to save Milla from reincarnation so she wouldn't forget them... but half assed the job and she lost her memories anyway. (If you rest at the inns, Milla has dreams about Jude, but 'some external force' always bleeps out his name...)
Spirit Nia Khera. Muzet has killed every spirit that learned about the Schism, and will do the same with the Great Four! They don't fear reincarnation... but do fear oblivion. They tell Milla to meet the new Great Four some day and go off. We go together to Spirit Milla Shrine and they all stand up to Muzet. She flips out about 'her mission' and we fight her.
- Me: AAAGH! This BITCH has killed me FOUR times already! What is the Unbreakable Guard skill good for if her tentacles PIERCE right through my blocks? And how did she use Event Horizon if I blocked Elemental Hymm? Her spells are laughable, weirdly enough, but her physicals are TEARING me a new one! (the blue exclamation mark pops up too often)
- Friend: What have we learned during this trip? The Four stood up for Milla, she has the strongest and most TP costly elemental artes. USE THEM! End combos with Sylph! Flamepunch her with Efreet if she tries to cast! Play keep away with Undine when she Overlimits!
- Me: And to think my own son had to teach me something so obvious.
- Friend: *idiot wink* Don't call me son, cuz you sure ain't my pops.
Okay... so we obtain a ball of light from a Maxwell ghost, which refuses to further speak with her fairy daughter. Muzet flies away, distressed. Supposedly we will restore Milla's memories if we climb the Spirit Hallowmont. We do and the Four are summoned by their lord, so Milla is left alone. She watches the rest of the party fight Maxwell, and desperatedly tries to remember who is the brave boy facing him. When Jude punches his barrier, Milla replies with a 'JUUUDE!' and adds her slash to the brawler's punch, PWN'ing old Maxy. And she rejoins exactly as I left her: Formal Costume + Rosy Cheeks (edited to blue so to resemble goddess markings.)
Boss battle agaisnt Maxwell. Used the same strat as with Muzet, abusing the Great Four, and did better than in Jude's Route (but somehow he still threw THREE Meteor Storms in three minutes!) The routes merge here: Gaius arrives, coup d'etat agaisnt God, thrown to Elympios, blah, blah. From here on it's smooth sailing to Milla Route's gold trophy and the level 100 chars + shops.

Anyway, first impressions:
- Kyle, for some bizarre reason, has a different last name from either of his parents. He's also dumb as a rock. No, Kyle, the mysterious anorexic waif says she's not interested.
- Reala gets brownie points for being the only heroine to directly blow off our hero as soon as she sees him. Go, Reala!
- I'm not sure why Loni is there other than to make the exposition that takes us to the Lens. Oh well, he's voiced by the Warrior of Light!
- Rutee knew her son is too dumb to go further than 30 meters away from her house. How can a goddamn heroine, who is married to the big hero himself not get enough governement funding for a small orphanage? Ok yeah, according to the skits, the new head of Atamoni is kinda corrupt.
- Oh man. Stahn went down like a chump. Kyle doesn't seem to remember.

Meanwhile according to Crunchyroll, if you own the Tales of Phantasia app and actually paid money for some of its features, sucks to be you. They're taking it down, which basically means the game will cease to work come August because it needs to connect to the internet in order to work.

@ Lu: Sorry if my wording was not clear. 'Evasion glitch' is not so much a glitch as 'Enemies' Evasion growth is several loads of magnitude higher than your heroes' Accuracy growth', which means that mid-to-late game your physical artes will start doing scratch damage, leaving magic as the only reliable way to stun/ combo them. It's a problem even with Acc+ titles. So you are kinda forced to take the 3 mages + tank approach.
The Zone System means that the left half of the battlefield (marked in blue in the lower right corner) is your turf, and the red half is the enemies'. Move right normally and the blue zone moves with you... but get trapped between enemies (or try to dash to the caster in the corner) and you stamina and TP get cut in half. What. Bullhit. Is. That. In Eternia you could move anywhere, dash to interrupt, call your allies, tell then to jump... Destiny 2's battles feel rigid and coreographed.
Story replies.
- Kyle's last name is Dunamis, same as Loni, because they were raised in the Dunamis Orphanage. The others already answered this one. He's dumb because Stahn Junior.
- Heeey, Reala only looks anorexic on her official art (Inomataaa!) Her ingame sprite is pretty cute. She blows off Kyle... because he is NOT a hero! Yet. Go do heroic things and maybe she will fall for you, Kyle! (hint: she will)
- Loni is there to provide you with another tank, and to use First Aid before you get the mage characters. Story-wise, he is Kyle's older brother figure and also Proto-Zelos. He lusts after Rutee, Philia, Lilith and Elraine off the top of my head.
- First point: Rutee fears the Assasin of Heroes coming back and finishing the job more than her son getting hurt out of dumbness. Second: the King of Darilsheid DID reward the heroes, but 15 years is a lot of time to burn through that money. Elraine is the head of Atamoni, so...
- About Barbatos: Kyle forgot him because trauma induced amnesia. Rutee and Loni decided to keep quiet about the event because the kid might have wanted to get revenge on the bastard (hint: he will get it.)
- Yeaaah, Leon =/= Judas. Totally. (Namco! It's Judas job to redeem Leon. Don't try to retcon Leon into a good guy with remakes and CD dramas, because they won't sway me: Judas did the job much better.)

Honestly I do not get the hype for that guy either. Right now to me he just seems like your average generic "HMPH" type rival with a cliche backstory. Seems like hype always does that shit for me, especially when it concerned Richter. Everyone going on about how cool he was I was there asking "What can this Richter do that Richter Belmont couldn't do better?"
Mighty, I am so ecstatic to know someone else who feels the same about Leon as I do. But with Richter, I think his appeal is that he's the nicest of the antagonists (Though with antagonists like Van, the bar's not that high.) and that he has strong characterization and is well written.
Yeah, Leon's just not doing it for me at all. And honestly even if Richter's not as douchey as the other villains I still can't get into him because of all the overhype and now he just felt like a bad replacement for Kratos. Besides which Kratos had THE sexiest English VA in the games. And I used to hate Kratos too.
I have to keep saying it if I gotta go gaga over a Leon and a Richter, gimme the rookie cop and vampire hunter.
The story isn't very deep and is mostly an excuse for another trip through Phantasia, but I think the themes of atonement and family were strong and touching. Also, Krululu is officially the best Tales mascot. He's cute, plot-relevant, a good fighter, funny in skits and FREAKIN' ADORABLE. Krululu~
