I'm kind of interested in Federation Force, but I'm concerned that we haven't heard anything about it since E3 and the interviews immediately afterward.

If I had a concern with Federation Force it would be that it doesn't look that different. The Marines seem to behave just like Samus did in Hunters, even though what little action we have seen of them beforehand would suggest otherwise.

The silence on Fed Force is curious. I have two theories. One, Nintendo saw that reception was bad, so they're not going to spend much marketing it since it would basically be flushing market down the toilet. This is the likely one. Second, one of the big complaints about FF is that we're getting this spin-off with no mainline title in sight. If there's one in development (which I suspect there is), it would obviously be for NX, which naturally we won't see anything on it for a few months. So they'll keep silent on FF until they can use it to drum up interest for Metroid NX (or vice-versa really).

Federation Force seems like something that might actually turn out to be kinda decent.

More believable than Samus/Boba Fett.

Samus would never let a half-blind guy make her fall to her death. That is for certain.

So a lot of fans on sites like Reddit believe that Nintendo's basically given up on the franchise. Like, they think that Nintendo sees the poor reception to both Other M and Federation Force as proof that gamers don't want another Metroid game, and feel that it's best to ignore this series in favor of milking the Mario and Zelda franchise. Especially since they're more likely to do something this year for Zelda's 30th anniversary, leaving Metroid in the dust. And since Taneba and Retro Studios have said that they aren't working on anything Metroid related, the chance of the series getting a new entry is slim.

Your thoughts?

I just hope this doesn't devolve into the fans being complete jerks as a whole and the publisher going ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . Basically what happened with Mega Man.

I'd have been fine with Nintendo giving up on Metroid if the game it gave up on was Metroid Prime 3. I'd be less happy but still okay if Nintendo stopped at MOM but Samus's Super Metroid/Metroid Zero Mission appearance remained her default.

Remember when Metroid Prime was a surprise hit, so Nintendo gave it a few mentions and kept defaulting to Super Metroid? How Metroid Fusion got nothing but two connectivity bonuses and a Smash tropy? Why couldn't they give that treatment to a surprise flop like MOM?

If Metroid is effectively replaced by Splatoon or something, oh well, it was already effectively replaced by Pokemon. It was remarkable to see Metroid get two second changes at one with Fusion and Prime. My knee jerk reaction at the news "Federation Force" was a flop wasn't happiness, I'm not celebrating the possibility there will be no more Metroid and until MOM the biggest offense I had with the series wasn't even in the series but in Super Smash Bros. A nonsensical character choice in a mascot fighter where a 2D non character is a selection. It wasn't even an issue of sexism, for the most part, because I already tolerated lewder from other fighting games, I just complained because a character I cared about was clumsily shoved into a fanservice role for once. Seeing a power suit that was explicitly stated to be a better looking MOM suit still angered me more than Zero Suit anything because a better looking MOM suit is still the MOM suit.

If this isn't making sense I'll use two other series I've talked about as examples. Hideto Kojima kept complaining to anyone who would listen that he was tired of Metal Gear, yet he kept making them, when in my opinion he should have stopped at "Solid" 2 or 3. Insomniac made it clear they were tired of making Spyro The Dragon and they actually stopped doing so but Spyro games kept coming out in spite of it, hitting rock bottom with "Enter The Dragonfly", a game so bad I tossed it despite it being a birthday gift from my father and concluding with the decent but In Name Only "Legend Of" series that, from my estimation, would have been better served with differently named characters who had new designs.(well, concluding as the lead in to what was supposed to be an unrelated series but effectively dead as Darkstalkers and they at least got to die with most of their identity intact)

Nintendo made Super Metroid, it was a good game in most people's opinions but it did not sell very quickly, so they stopped doing Metroid for awhile until they were sure they were ready, sure enough to take a gamble no one thought would work, that they themselves doubted at points but still sure in Metroid enough to not only take one gamble but start another project right alongside it. It was a success, financially and critically. But diminishing returns become unattractive so they stop until sure they're ready again, doing something else in the meantime. I can respect that. Insomniac still made Ratchet And Clank, a series I don't like more than their Spyro trilogy but one I can't argue against the success of. Nintendo obviously went on to make new successful series the first time Metroid was put on the back burner. Besides Pokemon there was also Custom Robo, Golden Sun and Pikmin. The second dry spell hasn't produced much in the way of longevity besides Denpa Men but Xenoblade could very well get branded on a third game, who knows what else may sprout? If "Federation Force" flops precedent suggests it won't be the ruination of Nintendo, much less video games.

I'd be happy to see Metroid go out strong. If it's going to struggle that's even more reason to take a break, so it will be easier to salvage later.

Wait, since when is Federation Force a flop? I thought it isn't even out yet.

I mean, I know it got a chilly reception but I think we still need to see more details before we can call it a flop-in-the-making.

I don't need to be a professional analyst to know that it'll flop. Because it will.

Not sure how Metroid was replaced by Pokemon or Splatoon. You could make a case for Tomodachi or Donkey Kong I guess. The reason more Metroid isn't being made isn't because it doesn't sell; it's because it doesn't have a dedicated team. Well okay, if it sold like Zelda it would probably have a team, but smaller games have their own dedicated developers. The people that do make Metroid aren't either because they don't want to or the opportunity cost is too high. Federation Force is being made because Tanabe wants it made and Next Level is both willing and able. We'll get another proper Metroid when Retro/Sakamoto/whoever wants to make it.

Actually, I wasn't aware that Federation Force wasn't out when I typed that. I knew it had a 2006 release date and responding to the question of the Reddit opinions that poor sales of MOM and Federation Force would doom the franchise.

When I learned it wasn't out yet I rushed back to this thread...okay, that's a lie, I made a not to post in this thread and admit I made a mistake later. I'm pulling for Federation Force. I have my doubts and worries about certain aspects I've seen of it, but I liked Metroid Prime Hunters and do want Metroid to be successful.

And I was under the impression Mario, Link and Samus were at one point considered the three titans of the NES but then the Super Metroid was overshadowed by Donkey Kong Country and would only be Vindicated by History during the Nintendo 64 years when there were no new Metroid games. I do know in the absence of Metroid it was Mario, Link and Pikachu as the titans of Nintendo, if not the 64. I'm sorry about how much of that I'm wrong about too.

I don't think Metroid was ever considered a sales titan even in the NES days, though I can't say that for sure. Even at its peak it was below Zelda at its trough. And even Zelda doesn't belong in the same sentence as Mario or Pokemon.

If Samus was an icon, it was because she was came from a well regarded adventure Nintendo game. Plus I think her games compliment well with Mario and Zelda in terms of setting. Mario is a whimsical modern fantasy. Zelda is an awe-inspiring medieval fantasy. Metroid is a brooding science fantasy. Together they gave a nice rounded view of the many places Nintendo's games could take us.

Which honestly stinks because the series is so much more interesting than most everything else Nintendo has done, plus Super and Prime are considered gaming gems.

Federation Force looks like a free app game. Not bad exactly looking for spin-off, but if they're planning on selling it as a full-price 3DS game I think they'll be disappointed.

Maybe a cheap download-only title.
