Well, it wouldn't exactly be incorrect to call it insulting to Sakurai.

"Oh, Sakurai left an exploit in his game? Let's just MAKE A RIPOFF OF HIS GAME AND CLAIM IT'S BETTER!"

[up]I don't know, the only truly disrespectful thing I see in it is Lucario, and even that's something the devs vehemently deny having any malicious intent about.

Hell, they even brought back the wacky Brawl stages via the ASL code because they know people like playing on them — just not in an official setting.

And, get this, they balance-tweaked the items even though their target demographic never uses them. They really do want to accommodate all playstyles. And while it had its merits, Brawl goes out of its way to only accommodate one playstyle.

Thankfully, Sak's gotten a lot less spiteful with 4. Nowadays I consider the 4/PM split to be comparable to Street Fighter / SF Alpha.

Project M is the only fangame that really has a very vocal hatedom. The only hate the Super Smash Flash games tend to get is the inclusion of Original Generation characters (Blade and Blue), Western Animation characters (Mr. Incredible), and Anime characters (Inu Yasha, Naruto, Goku, and Ichigo). Okay, maybe for how Smash Flash 1 and early SSF 2 demos played.

SSF2 still does get a ton of hate for Goku, though. Like, every single time it gets even a faint bit of praise on Smashboards, here come the "get that weeaboo shit outta my face" crowd to drown it out, like clockwork.

This is despite the devs doing everything they can to downplay Goku's presence without removing him outright.

And we don't talk about Super Smash Flash 1..

That's really what I said, the SSF games tend to get hate because "ew, the game would be better without animu!"

Note: I don't believe in this mindset. I don't say that Goku, Naruto, and Ichigo make SSF 2 better, but I think they are good characters in the game.

[up] I think SSF1 was a good, but flawed game (okay, I mostly like to use Inu Yasha in that game. That's probably the only reason I go back to SSF 1 is for the characters that aren't in 2 currently)

SSF1 was phenomenal in 2006.

And it IS fun with the Punched Across the Room glitches and all.

I just hate the reputation it carries with it to the sequel.

Isn't there a thread for the Smash fan games?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but only 2 people consistently bring up the fan games here. People are apathetic towards them in this thread from what I've gathered.

I will vouch for the fangame threads not getting much use. I tried posting my list of characters I'd like to see as unlockables/expansions in SSF 2 on the Super Smash Flash thread and it hasn't seen a post since.

Plus, they are related to Smash Bros.

Baffle: Yeah, I dislike how SSF 2 is unfairly stigmatized as "The Smash Bros where you can play as Sora, Naruto, Ichigo, and Goku".

[up][up][up]Hence why necro-ing a thread just to migrate a topic (which is already a pretty transparent way to kill one, even in active threads) would be pointless.

The current discussion started off as a tangent of a perfectly on-topic exchange anyway, and would have died on its own if left for a few more minutes.

I don't mind talking about fangames here since I only really have one other person IRL to talk about them because he has played the Smash Flash series before I got into those games. He's pretty much why I started playing in the first place.

This discussion has me thinking: Why do games like Super Smash Flash 2 attract a small audience?

And me, I don't see any problem with talking about them since most things having to do with them work exactly the same way in the canon games.

Case in point; it came up this time because I was talking about how neutral a stage Smashville was in every game it appears in.

The only fangame I've played is Project M, and for me the main draw of that was getting to mess around with character skins and adding my own music.

Fun fact, Joe Satriani fits really well on the F-Zero stages.

[up][up]I ended up bringing it up on a tangent when saying that not all competitive players are jerks, noting how little hate they tend to get minus PM.

Although SSF 2!Smashville has a better fitting track for a fighting game than most of the AC tracks in Brawl or Smash 4.

It's a little extreme to suggest that Brawl's mechanics was a result of Sakurai being spiteful. It's almost 100% just him trying to make the game more accessible to a wider audience, which is a good goal. Smash 4, certainly, was where he learned from past mistakes and came to a very solid even point.

Anyway I uploaded my first video. I wish playing Dedede was always this fluid but everything worked out really well for me in this match. Helps that DK is one of Dedede's better match-ups.

So... Project M has ceased development. They've also removed downloads, making me wonder if it was a C&D.

Nintendo definitely knew about them for years, and they just now got the C&D? Did they go to EVO like what happened with that MLP fangame?

Because legal teams aren't static, and newcomers may be looking to make names for themselves, so they go out and find things to shut down for "credit".

No C&D or other legal action was involved.

I'm surprised it took this long. They were passionate, but even if they skirted by legally, there's only so long you can work on a fan project like this without getting paid.
