About the most reasonable explanation I've heard for the whole electricity scheme is that they miss air conditioning.

According to Remi's win quote against Youmu in SWR she mentions ghosts are used for air conditioning

Ghosts being used for air conditioning is sort of a running gag common to many of the canon materials.

I've seen vastly more hate for Sanae than Aya, despite Sanae doing less. It kind of annoys me, despite my being neutral to Sanae and fond of Aya

People all have their own opinions, it's not like the characters are all completely adored by the fans

And Yamame doesn't use her plague powers, Parsee doesn't leave her bridge, Yuugi spends her time boozing, Rin's a supernatural maintenance worker, Satori's a reclusive crazy youkai pet lady, and Kisume... does... has a bukkit. My point is that both surface and underground youkai have the capacity to be unpleasant, but neither apparently possesses the inclination. So it's a bit of a dick move to kick out one arbitrarily "bad" segment of the supernatural population.

That raises the question - Japanese mythology has demons and devils, yes? And although oni and vampires are lumped under "devil," we haven't seen any good examples of... oh wait, Makai. And except for Shinki they all looked just like humans. Huh. I guess that's sorta deep.

Wait, no, those weren't "natural" demons, the Makaijin were Shinki's creations and therefore pretty much the opposite of traditional infernals. So presumably real devils would be found underground along with the hells and stuff. So... where are they?

I wasn't denying their existence, of course for any given character there's going to be a subsection of the fanbase that dislikes them. I was more surprised that there were so many of them, as I was previously unaware of the fact.

There's more than one hell, so I assume that they're chilling with Konngara and Kikuri in other, less abandoned ones.

Same for my opinions of Sanae and Aya. But Aya has also recieved a bunch of hate for her consecutive appearances, leading to Memetic Mutation about how she has seduced ZUN into doing so, but most of it has seemed to die down lately. Sanae seems to be going through the same phase in my opinion.

Sanae's a new protagonist though, one who has much more reason to be active than Sakuya or Youmu. Aya starring in the photo games makes sense, but she got an awful lot of cameos in addition to those.

Of course, I like both of them, so I'm happy.

Why wouldn't Sanae be playable a lot? She's basically Luigi as it is.

Well it seems that in both fanon and canon, Sanae and the Moriya shrine seem to be much more popular than Reimu's shrine.

That's prolly because, in-universe at least, Sanae's shrine actually has gods.

I got the mental image of Sanae, Kanako, and Suwako all putting on some goofy carnival show and earning all sorts of cheers and accolades from the crowd while Reimu sits off in the distance sipping tea all by herself.

Doesn't Reimu kinda prefer it that way? Sipping her tea in peace? (Though, of course, it would be better if visitors stopped by occasionally to drop something into the donation box.)

I didn't say she was unhappy with the setup, although it did seem sadder in my head.

People hate it when other people can read their minds. Animals love it when people can read their minds. So she's loved by animal youkai but hated by everyone else.
