Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning

Well, no, not really, but denial hope springs eternal.
I do reply to discussion page posts, actually. But I don't know everything or do have an opinion on everything.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHmmmm...this gives me an idea for the tech updates.
Hmm. Splitting them up with the proposed split is kinda lopsided. A-F is 164k, G-L is 58k, M-R is 72k, and S-Z is almost 89k.
[edit] Splitting it A-C, D-L, M-R, S-Z gets it a little closer, though it's still kinda heavy towards the first half of the alphabet. 108k, 105k, 81k, and 89k.
On the other hand, though, I'd feel kinda silly doing just 2 letters on a subpage ( ), and 100ish vs 80ish is a lot less uneven than the first split.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpNot lopsized at all in my opinion; a difference of a factor of ~2 is not much.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman^ edited while you posted
All your safe space are belong to TrumpThe latter split works fine.
Ok, I've made the split for Series. The Walking Dead, including setting up the main work page for indexing the subpages and typing the subpages as work example lists. Custom titles have been submitted, just waiting on mod approval. If there's nothing else I'll submit the sandbox pages for cutlisting later.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpI made the split for the Characters.Dragonball Supporting Cast page.
Question, perhaps suitable for another thread but I'm not sure where:
Has the back-end code that breaks at 500k characters been fixed with the new site, or is that still a pending change?
I'll ask, but given the issues that are being targeted right now, I doubt it.
Actually, considering pages have gone to upwards of 600k without any ill effects that I can see, I almost wonder if it was already fixed, or at least if the cap was raised.
As I found out on Funny.Game Grumps Arin And Danny just now, the page still can't take larger edits, so no, the issue isn't fixed.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAs I posted in the discussion for the Game Grumps Arin and Danny section, Wikipedia has a list of what dates every single series was started in all of Game Grumps, so with this resource splitting them by years seems much less daunting.

Technically speaking, the problem with splitting that page is that I can't see agreement on how to do so.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman^Organizing by the date the first episode was uploaded seems reasonable to me.
ETA: The main Grumps page needs to edited to enforce proper Example Indentation and removal of audience reaction stuff that the Grumps didn't mention.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? Please don't edit further content into an already existing post, especially when it's a request.
Anyway, that page is too large to be edited even for that, so that edit can't be done.
Finally, I'll today search the "new edits" lists for very large pages by filtering for namespaces and pages with more than 999 edits. I've already done so for Funny and Characters.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHmmm...for some of the character pages, we could probably split by heading (Hyrule Warriors and Final Fantasy XIV for example), while https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/AceAttorneyProsecutorsAndLawEnforcementOfficers could probanly have prosecutors, detectives, judges, other each have their own page.
The Order of the Stick: The Order of the Stick if we moved the four bottom entries that would get it around 355K.
One Piece-Organizations And Crews We could probably just give each saga its own page.
I've added a long list of oversized pages, including Characters.Smite which is actually so large that it can't be edited anymore.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI feel the smite page it would be pertinent to separate by pantheon or pantheons, maybe two to a page except the last one having three (since we're at an uneven seven)
I'd do it myself, but I have no idea how to index pages. Last time I made a page from scratch (the Muramasa one) it took about six months for someone to come index it.

^In this case, you just need to set the type of the main Characters.Smite page to "examples+index" through the "page type button" in the sidebar. Then you post a list of the subpages you want to index here and I'll swap them in.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAlright, I... think I've done it correctly?
I had to do it in reverse order for ease of use, if this is basically right can you go ahead and unlock the main page so I can start moving entries?
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/SmiteRomanMayanAndHindu https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/SmiteNorseAndChinese https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/SmiteGreekAndEgyptian
Er, you might want to copy over the content in question from the main character page, using the "source" button in the sidebar.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman^Oh, handy, on it
Initiative has been taken, I've copied everything except the "NP Cs and upcoming gods" part to the new pages
