Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

     Eddie's old post
Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

I see, I sort remembered something like that, but I am apparently terrible at navigating the TRS graveyard because I could not find it for the life of me.

Just use "search forum titles" from anywhere in the forums and enter the page's name without spaces.

Would it be best to ask a mod to reopen it then and propose we start splitting it up?

[Disclaimer: the numbers about characters totals may and will be subject of variation because i jerked my way looking at the source and copy-and-pasting everything to a character counter. Add/Remove aprox. 1 to 10k]

My focus is Characters.Touhou . I try to respect game numeration to make it look "pretty". Before troping characters, there are some paragraphs of intro to context, images, and translations of arround 46k characters, included in the totals.

Characters.Touhou Windows Two ~481k characters total. Recommend splitting into 2 parts:

  • Mountain of Faith to Subterranean Animism ~200k
  • Undefined Fantastic Object to Hopeless Masquerade ~280k

Characters.Touhou Windows One ~442k characters total. This one is causing trouble.

  • Embodiment of Scarlet Devil to Perfect Cherry Blossom ~300k
  • Imperishable Night to Phantasmagoria of Flower View ~150k
Immaterial and Missing Power (TH 7.5) has only one girl and ~12k characters. Happens chronologically after PCB (TH 7) but was released after IN (TH 8). I'd like to use whole numbers, but the first page is rather big, so it would go to the second page.

Now, the current pages may be kept, but they have few links, so they could be safetly deleted.

Characters.Touhou Windows Two is ~496k, Characters.Touhou Windows One is ~466k. This is according to the automatic character counter at the extreme bottom left of the page.

When sizing potential splits, I generally copy-and-paste the wiki source to a sandbox page, which is okay for determining the relative size of each potential split unit, but not necessarily so much for the absolute size if I try to combine multiple units. (A "unit" is usually a folder, but could be anything I could consider the smallest unit that could be its own page.)

I get the bit at the start of Windows Two about the one-year break from new games, but could the content of the two pages be combined and re-split into three pages of ~300k characters each? That means they'd fill back up that much faster, but it would at least mitigate the wonky balance of page sizes between the two parts of Windows One.

Also, I think we're way overdue for a new list...

You'll be happy to hear that I took the liberty of splitting FridgeHorror. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic into separate pages.

Noting Characters. The Legend Of Korra Enemies here, since it's almost 600000 characters.

Split it by season, maybe.

Looks like someone split that into parts 1 and 2, but they're ridiculously lopsided, with one having about 200K characters, and the other ~400K going into the 2nd part.

I think that the seasonal split suggested [up] would be a better one.

[edit] And on something of a self-note, Dawson Casting is at 435K. That should be an easier split, by medium if not the straight/exception split mentioned in the ATT query that brought DC to my attention. If I can find time to pop that tomorrow I'll see what I can do.

I've just locked Funny.Game Grumps Arin And Danny because it's become so large (727662 characters) that it's creating problems to edits (see also the discussion page). I am not sure how to split it, though.

For your information: Someone seemed to have attempted to split Characters.Suikoden V but did not finish it for a reason. The split pages are here (some of them, at least): https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/changes.php?filter=SuikodenV&daNumber=10

In case the page has to be split, maybe we can use them.

Edit: Here is the complete list: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=SuikodenV

Septimus Heap, maybe we can take the folders of moments from longer series (like Pokémon Fire Red, The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, and Trauma Center: Second Opinion), and make them their own articles. Maybe title them Funny.GameGrumpsPokemonFireRed, Funny.GameGrumpsWindWakerHD, etc.

It also might help to give the Game Grumps VS and One-Offs folders their own pages, considering they're the two longest folders in the article.

Harry Potter needs some help. A lot of the subpages are huge and need to be split.

To trope, or not to trope...that is the question.

For the Game Grumps page we should split the continuous episodes and the one shots. Shame it got that big. I was goin to add the advice from stupid Uncle Jack bit.

Question: when we're doing character counts for pages, are we doing a count of the entire page (main article + header/footers + sidebar), or just the main article?

Wiki markup, I think. Not sure if it's important, though.

For the Game Grumps Arin and Danny funny moments, one suggestion could be to separate them year they were started.

Wind Waker HD for example was started November 1, 2013, and ended Jun 9, 2014, so it would go in the 2013 folder.

Another option would be to remove the excess of links and instead simply list which part the funny moment in question comes from, and at what time.

"2m30s into part 5, this funny thing happens."

I don't think the latter change would be much of an improvement (the removal of links). As for the former one, it might work. Who is willing to implement any kind of split?

I think splitting it by years would work really well.

When we split Funny/Chuggaaconroy, we did it by game — no reason we can't do the same for Game Grumps.

I'm guessing the impending changing of the guard explains why Fast Eddie never came back with a new list of pages? Will this thread remain a priority for the new guys given the impending database overhaul might make it moot?

Yes, that was the reason. This thread may or may not be retired, depending upon whether Character and other subpages are altered (the proposals I've seen are mostly applicable to work and YMMV pages).

Well, until the new admin that replaced FE chimes in or the new system is set up, this thread still has use, so I present the following question:

I posted about it in the discussion page for Series. The Walking Dead that the main page is almost up to 400k characters, but haven't seen any response since my Dec 2 post.

My question is how to split it. The usual path is to split them into several alphabetical groupings, so how about A-F, G-L, M-R, and S-Z? I'll need to sandbox that to see how the trope list splits up, when I get some free time (half past never, it seems sad ), but that doesn't seem to me to be all that bad a split pattern.

I see no issue with that split. I'll see about asking for a big page report, I think.

I agree, that split seems legit as long as none the resulting subpages are fairly balanced in their own character counts.
