Overrated: The Modern Warfare games. They're good but certainly nothing special.

Underrated: Agreeing with rallyfan on this one. Crimson Skies needs more love.

Overrated: Final Fantasy 7, Ocarina of Time(I definately thought Majora's Mask was better overall, though the first was much easier to start off)

Underrated: Quest 64, Lagoon, Lego Racers 1 and 2

Overrated: Mirrors Edge - I wish I could understand what some people loved about this game. I didn't get the nausea thing which I heard some people got, but the lack of plot, the button configuration they had was infuriating (sense I couldn't change it to what worked for me), the combat was teeth-grindingly hard. If I had a weapon, died and respawned back to the beginning (WHEN I STILL HAD THE WEAPON) it magically disappeared.

Underrated: I'm not sure if this counts because everyone that's played this seems to love it, but it wasn't too successful, but Skies Of Arcadia. The combat was a little repetitive but the plot was awesome, the characters were fun to watch and the ship to ship battles were just plain awesome.

Overrated: World Of Warcraft. Now I'm not saying it sucks, but it's greatness is a bit overhyped, to say the very least. So much as any other MMO that has a fantasy setting gets called a "World Of Warcraft Clone" just cos of that. It's like calling all JRPG's an Final Fantasy Clone. Or calling Doom a crummy version of Halo. Well ok maybe not as bad as the last example...

Underrated: Fur Fighters. Now this isn't a "furry thing." I usually dislike all other shooters except Time Crisis style light gun ones or some nice Shoot 'Em Up's. This is a 3rdPersonShooter game that I actually liked to play. Maybe cos it also mixed in platforming and puzzle elements, and the controls felt right for me. And the difficulty wasn't too high and you could switch characters mid mission (which was mandatory and required, due to their specific abilities and the babies refused to be rescued by anyone else than their own parents).

Not the best game ever or greatest fun I had, but still a shooter I did not dismiss soon after playing.

Overrated: Dragon Age. I couldn't stomach more than an hour or two of this game. The combat is extremely dull, the story is generic and the railroading to become a Grey Warden could only be more contrived and blatant if they put you on an actual railroad. Add that to the insipid, uninspired quests (Collect three vials of Darkspawn blood? REALLY? It's the first quest after completing the "origin" story, and you're already out of ideas?) and you have a crappy game that doesn't deserve any of the praise it gets.

Underrated: Alundra. It's basically a clone of A Link to the Past, and it does it very well. The graphics and music/sound are outstanding, the puzzles are challenging and it's got a decent enough story too, thanks to the impeccable english translation. The real Zelda games went 3D, and although Ocarina of Time is a great game, I think Alundra is a better successor to A Link to the Past.

Not to be rude, but just because you don't like a game, doesn't mean it doesn't deserve any praise.

Anyway, I like a lot of popular games that I don't think are as good as they say. I'm not saying they're bad, just not flawless.

As for underrated, I'm not sure if it would count, but I'd choose Alpha Protocol. The weapon aiming takes a little getting used to, there's a few bugs, and the person voicing Michael can't sound threatening at all, but it's not terrible.

It's a subjective opinion. Obviously people are going to disagree. Prefacing everything with "in my opinion" would be redundant and annoying.

What I mean is, there are games which I don't much care for, but can still acknowledge as being good - but Dragon Age isn't one of them. I never cared for the fighting genre, but I'm not gonna say that Street Fighter II is crap.

I'm not gonna say you're an idiot of you like a game I dislike, tastes differ. Dragon Age just hit all the wrong notes for me.

Overrated: Dragon Age, loved Mass Effect (despite being my first Bioware game), but I just couldn't get into this game. Combat was repetetive, anti-immersive, and either too much strategy, or too little, I couldn't tell. And the characters were not enough to drive me to complete this game.

Underrated: Mirror's Edge, Plot is 'meh', but the gameplay was solid in my opinion. Luman may disagree, but I enjoyed the challenge that came with the game at times, the controls wern't too difficult. I can't wait for something else like this to come along.

Well, you do have a point. Dragon Age is, honestly, a little boring. From experience, it takes a really long time to get through. I don't think there are Bioware games that take longer than this. Still, I enjoyed it, and I hope DA2 is less tedious.

I can understand the point about DA. I think it's one of the Best RPGS of all time, but it took me about 50 hours for one playthrough. It is a very, very long game.

Overrated: Seconding Final Fantasy VII. People raved about the graphics when it came out, but I wasn't impressed when I was running around Midgar with a version of Cloud Strife that looked like a deformed Lego man. If it were a question of graphics limitations, I'd understand, but given the fact that the characters looked much better in FF8, it seems that someone made an incredibly ill-advised decision on the art style.
Also, as a matter of personal preference, I'd rather have a group of characters with a much greater variety of strengths and weaknesses. This is because I like the strategic element of having to develop a balanced team of characters who can support each other. In FF7, however, any character can use powerful magic as long as they're wearing an armband socketed with the proper magic stones. It just wasn't as interesting.

Underrated: Bloody Roar series. Particularly, Bloody Roar: Primal Fury. Not exactly a masterpiece as far as a series of fighting games go, but I'll be damned if I didn't find it fun anyway.

Well, there's also the possibility that they improved the engine.

As for underrated, I'm seconding Alpha Protocol. It has its fair share of flaws, and I won't deny that some reviews bring some fair points, but it's far from terrible, and as far as a very reactive spy/action movie/game it actually hit the right tone for me.

No, I honestly do think that VIII and X were much better games. VII is just..I dunno. It just has not aged well, and I don't mean the graphics. The characters never really get fleshed out, I couldn't relate to anyone, I just really really dislike it. With VIII, I loved the drawing system, and I could relate to Squall more because I'm also filled with teenage angst. X is my favorite thought, because it was the first FF game I ever played, and the story and characters are amazing. And those graphics? Yeah, graphics don't make games, but there was some major Scenery Porn for me.

Having played Final Fantasy VII when it first came out, I would say that it deserved the praise that it got back then, but it's weathered poorly due to Seinfeld Is Unfunny; it's constantly bashed for not being innovative, which couldn't be further from the truth, but it's hard to appreciate that innovation when all the best received elements have been copied ad nauseam.

Overrated: Vagrant Story. I wanted to like this one so much. There was a lot of story potential and some really original ideas. But the gameplay mechanics were so unintuitive and poorly explained that you were almost guaranteed to struggle every step of the way without a guide, and the setting was just too dark. I don't mean this in the sense of being dark and edgy, I mean last time I tried to replay the game, I put it down in disgust three rooms in because I just couldn't see anything. You spend about 97% of the game underground, where at it's brightest it's about on par with my basement in the evening with all the lights turned off.

Underrated. Monster Rancher 2. Why 2? Because 2 was, quite simply, the pinnacle of the series. It was the broadest, most expansive, and most challenging of the games so far released. Yes, it would have benefited from the dynamic tournament rosters and rival trainers introduced later in the series, but those elements weren't enough to make of for the sheer depth of gameplay that was lost when the series moved to the PS 2.

...eventually, we will reach a maximum entropy state where nobody has their own socks or underwear, or knows who to ask to get them back.
