Rebuild of Evangelion

personally i think it will be used on the credits of the third movie.

Not that I'm trying to use Ron the Death Eater on her for thinking she's just a Mari Sue that doesn't fit in the setting or anything... Except that I do like my Eva pilots like I like my coffee, with a lot of existential angst and insecurities, and milk

Also, it's just that she's too good to be true. There's gotta be something wrong with that girl, and the "ace pilot who deep inside has self-esteem issues and does what they do just to be loved" is already filled by Asuka since always, so... Mari being SEELE's mole instead of Kaworu and giving a more active and less creepily-obvious betrayer to the team would be nice.

It would be really boring if she was just piloting that thing for the lulz. To me, at least.

so yeah, I think I read something somewhere about the Eva Impact thing being a horse-racing ad (hence the ponified Eva, *shivers*), and the extra guy that appears being a cameo for that ad

Mari is the Kwisatz Haderach.

The fact that Mari finds piloting the Eva fun points to some deep-rooted psychological problems as it is. She's probably just so far gone that she appears normal (a.k.a she's passed that threshold where no amount of therapy will ever help ever again).

That's my opinion anyway.

One does not simply have fun, without going through psychological hell, in Evangelion

Is enjoying being an Eva pilot a mental health issue by itself? Yes, totally.

Is it consistent with every other kind of dysfunction NGE explores for drama? Hell No.

Why does it have to be? Why does this incarnation of Evangelion have to be as dour as the original? I think this Evangelion is more about positive character growth as opposed to a reflection on a nihilistic spiral into depression; Mari in herself might not be that, but to me she's a breath of fresh air.

Again, I agree totally. Rebuild is supposed to be Evangelion before Anno went off his meds and decided to drown the whole ant colony in the tears of abused children. A.k.a it's a slightly more standard (but still pretty freaking weird) mecha series. Just because a lot of things were retained does not mean that the Rebuild movies have to be as sour as the first series. The tone of 2.0 is evidence enough that things have changed in the Eva verse as of Rebuild, both for the pilots and the audience.

Sure it points to a psychological problem, but to me that's meaningless if we never actually get to see more than just that.

At the end of the movie, no, during the credits, we'll see what the characters are doing after all the big bad stuff has happened. Mari will be laying on a sofa and staring at the ceiling while talking to her therapist.

Simple way to show she has psychological issues and is now dealing with them.

that's my opinion. Right now, as we have just 2.0 to analyze, she's just a crazy chick who dropped out of nowhere, did some stuff, invoked a Beast Ex Machina that didn't work and became a new source of income in Gainax sex-figurines line, but she still has very little if any revelance to the plot, I wanna see her role expanded and deepened (sic?), so that she feels less like an OC and more like a character that deserves the Eva Pilot title

by the way, we still don't know which Chirudoren she is, right?

Then we have to judge Touji as being completely unfitting Evangelion as well, since he didn't have the same kind of issues Shinji, Misato, Asuka, Ritsuko and Gendo had. Yep, he doesn't belong there, then. Because all the characters in a piece of fiction have to be cut from the same cloth and follow the core motifs of the narrative to a tee, never mind the fact there are several layers to any fictional set.

Hell, compared to Blood Knight Mari, Touji was completely normal.

Yeah, but Touji really was supposed to be the normal guy who gets dragged into the whole mess. I'm aware that diversity is a good thing and that most secondary/tertiary characters won't angst like the protags anyway, but, as I said, I hope 3.0 sets the sights better on which role Mari is gonna take, what is she doing there. Piloting the Evas just because she feels like it seems a little shallow for a new character introduced this late in the game, OC comparisons are unavoidable. But here I am ranting about Mary again...

The point is though, what KSPAM is getting at, that Evangelion was never supposed to get as 'Dark' as it did post Zureal fight. I think someone put it correctly that NGE is the Psychology that shows just how far down the pit goes, whereas Ro E is the Philosophy which offers you the way out.
