No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

Thanks. I have no idea what to think of that.

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."On the plus side, it means they're listening to what people are saying; on the minus, it might just be "don't name individuals".
A brighter future for a darker age.I seem to recall some (probably apocryphal) soundbite from a Codex writer where the guy who used to get his name on the cover was the guy who did the most work on the Codex, but the diference was maybe 5% more than the next designer. Basically, they always have been team exercises, but the guy who put in the most work (and it was only a little bit more) got his name on the book.
But who knows how true this is.
Pagad: I was more thinking of pistols, as this guy is a Metallican Gunslinger.
The Guard/Militarum codex was similarly credited to the "design team".
Oh, okay. Then I'd say las-, auto- or even black powder pistols, depending on tech level.
With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.Well, this guy is basically a space cowboy.
I don't yet have a Home World type because that's gonna be randomised.
I'm hoping that it's either Hive World or Imperial World.
Currently the options are
- laspistols
- autopistols
- stub revolvers
Per 19674, I've added Demoted to Extra and Put on a Bus to several characters across the Guard, Ork, Eldar, and Tyranid character pages. Can someone please double-check those and tweak them as needed?
Woo Hoo I have figured out how to edit. I checked the two entries on the Eldar page and changed a couple of things. I will check the rest when I have time.
EDIT:I have checked all those entries now and changed things where appropriate.

Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellLooks good, thanks for covering me.
I now have an idea for a Dark Heresy game.
It's gonna involve the Ordo Xenos.
Here is how I am going with my Stompa
Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellWow, that model's massive.
Yes. I don't usually paint anything that big so it is a bit of a challenge.
On another note here is something Willbyr may like

Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellYou gonna use that in a game?
Awesome Stompa! That's honestly bigger than I thought it would be.
I finally started on some infantry today - a sergeant◊ and two◊ troopers.◊ No lasguns yet, I want to paint the torsos first.
With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.Thanks. Your Guard are looking cool.
Yep, especially now that it is in the Codex. My current gaming project is to use every single unit and character I have painted at a Throne of Skulls tournament (although not at the same time of course) and have them do something worthy of note.
Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellRandom interest raising question: Would anyone be interested in a short Only War campaign? I've been in an Imperial Guard kinda mood lately.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.ROGUE TRADER MASTER RACE

Finally got caught up...that Stompa's turning out great! Those Firedrakes are really nice, too.
A library downtown has a copy of Rogue Trader (as in 1st edition 40k, not the modern RPG). I went down yesterday with my brother and cousin and had a look (mind you, I did see it before). I was too busy laughing at how utterly 80s it was to take serious note of the rules (though they seemed to be as byzantine as modern 40k is), but here were the observations about the fluff I made.
- Dear◊ god◊, the◊ Eighties◊, it◊ burns◊! If a post apocalyptic society 1000 years from now were to dig up an old copy of this book, they would know immediately this was from the 1980s.
- Holy fluff evolution, Batman! There is no Horus Heresy and the Emperor just ascended the Golden Throne due to attrition, Chaos barely even exist, we had folks like the Slann and Squats running around.
- Despite the absolute Narm though, I honestly enjoyed the "atmosphere" of Rogue Trader better than 40k. Correct me if I'm wrong, people who actually played it, but I got a very indieish, "some gaming geeks sat down together and decided to make a science fiction game" feel from it. It definitely reminded me of the dystopian science fiction/fantasy scenarios the folks over on Alternate History Dot Com.
- There was a hobby section! My god, there really was a hobby section that wasn't "Buy our pretty-looking miniatures"!
All in all, I think to some degree, I enjoyed the style of Rogue Trader a lot more than 40k in its current edition. I mean, they obviously had to change it so that it wouldn't become out of date, but I kind of think that the modern game is in some respects as absurd as Rogue Trader was, except they take themselves seriously now, whereas the 1st edition had the right balance of silliness of seriousness that sold it.

Halper's Law: as the length of an online discussion of minority groups increases, the probability of "SJW" or variations being used = 1.I just can't take Rogue Trader seriously.
Anyway, I'm thinking about what kind of weaponry I wanna get for my space cowboy.
I'll probably get a Steadholder Lever Gun as my rifle and either a pair of stub revolvers or a pair of Carnodon hand cannons.
Does that sound good?

You're not supposed to take it seriously. I mean, it's got Lord Lucan of the Space Wolves (and, for that matter, the Space Wolves), the Inquisitor Obiwan Sherlock Clouseau and the two-page spread of the design studio as odd denizens of the Dark Millennium to give it away. :)
Santos L Halper, what's so 80s about the first and last images? Is it being sideways?
I'd dispute the fact that you're supposed to take modern 40K seriously. I mean, some people do, but only as part of the greater joke.
It's kind of like Judge Dredd in that way.
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntI need at least some seriousness in my fiction.
I generally don't take 40k very seriously but I don't want to laugh whenever I think about it.
They've decided to just credit all codices from now on to the "design team," or something like that. I'd guess it's them wanting to defuse unhealthy levels of criticism towards individuals (I can't imagine how much hatemail Mat Ward must have gotten), but that would require being aware of what fans are saying, which seems to run counter to GW's woefully poor communication skills.
