No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

I fully expect such an effort to go horribly awry. I imagine a Tau expansion rushing out with their new lackeys and crushing world after world, then turning right around and having to fight their way back through a bunch of new Ork worlds.
I doubt the Tau, or anyone else, are stupid enough to try that.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Yeah, there's a reason why even the most powerful of the more pragmatic kinds of Rogue Traders don't amass small armies of Ork Freebooterz (who are comparatively more "cerebral" about warfare and combat than their more common kin) as considerably effective shock troops and ship-invasion forces: It never ends well for the Rogue Traders in question.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.I would ask "why" but it's most likely the standard Ork reason.
"Boss, we'ze run outta boyz ta fight!"
"Den we'll fight doze Rogue Tradaz! Get 'em, boyz!"
My lord, Orks are not unpredictable. Quite the contrary, you can rely on them to turn against you.

Wise Papa Smurf, corrupted by his own power. CAN NO LEADER GO UNTAINTED?!SIIIINDRIIIIIIII!
I still want to know how *Bale* made it into the *Alpha Legion*.
Were they running an exchange program with the World Eaters or something? Or were they just really, really desperate?
Well the Alpha Legion is Chaos Undivided. So they can have Khornate Lords working alongside Tzeentchian sorcerers.
It's Chaos. The selection process for who's most blessed by it is by its nature somewhat random.
Nous restons ici.And if your Lord is too stupid to be able to have plans that foil your underlings' plans, then you deserve to be leader, as Bale learned the hard way.
They are also the guys whose hat is "sneaky backstabbing bastards". Bale wouldn't know a devious plan if it kicked him in the head.
I always assumed Bale was just a big, loud distraction from whatever the real Alpha Legion is up to.
"Well, we've got a loudmouthed halfwit and a transparently scheming sorcerer. Let's send them and some other rejects to raise hell on Tartarus while we execute Operation Tangled Meerkat two sectors over."

Current earworm: "Time of Death"Same as I thought. The Alpha Legion has a use for everyone, smart or stupid.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."What were they there for, anyway? The Maledictum, wasn't it? And the Orks were just a distraction?
Yup. Or maybe that's what they want us to think.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."I wonder... you think they'll ever *end* Warhammer 40,000, if the tabletop game loses too many fans or just stops being popular enough to earn money?
Because the idea of them actually creating a conclusive ending is oddly appealing. :/
Until an alternative wargame like Warmachine manages to build up a large enough fanbase and a franchise (RP Gs, novels, etc) to start pulling in newbies and disgruntled vets in large numbers that's never going to happen. And it would have to be bad for them to consider that. GW is by far the biggest player in this niche and even if competition did come around they would still have the advantage of being a long established company with games that are almost 30 years old.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.End it, I doubt. I wonder what the universe of Warhammer 50,000 would be like, though.
Only the sun has stopped. It'd be a beautiful, peaceful galaxy where all war has ended, the Warp has become benign, and all races exist in harmony and cooperation.......Or it least it would, if you barbaric ingrates submitted to the Greater Good.

Compare the 31st Millennium to the 41st, and extrapolate further decay based on that. Space Marines are in carapace armor as standard, while 1st company veterans can undergo the dangerous implantation of the black carapace to be able to interface with ancient suits of power armor. Mars and some other Forge Worlds know how to manufacture the Leman Russ, but for the most part the Imperial Guard is fielding lackluster tanks right out of World War One (should we call them Guillimans?). You might find one working plasma weapon in a given sector.
I'm more interested in Warhammer 41,000, myself. Close enough to be recognizable, with a thousand years to take a half-step away from the almighty status quo.
Current earworm: "Time of Death"I doubt they'd even end it if they were going to discontinue it.
That is assuming that it isn't a string of scoured lumps of rock dotted with ruins. They have printed some pretty macabre and doom-laden stuff about the Tyranids in past, after all, and I'm not sure what the current 'Crons would do but it's unlikely to end well for all that many people.
Wait till the Tau breed Orks that are susceptible to the pheromones.
