No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

I finished assembling my Primaris Marines (traded the Death Guard to a friend for his box of non-Nurgle Chaos) last night. Have to wait for the paints I ordered to come in, and then they'll be painted up in my homebrew marine chapter's colour scheme.

Additionally, with all the paints I'll be able to paint my Khornate army.

they're fairly easy to build but I'm sure I've missed a ton of mould lines.
Okay, glad I'm not the only one who noticed that those things are COVERED in mold lines.

[up][up] I just finished assembling my Primaris Marines this evening...hoping to find someone to trade my Death Guard to for their Primaris Marines but I'm not expecting to get any takers. If no one pipes up in the next week or so, I'll put them together and paint them up.

The new Necron rules are pretty sweet, but I'm still leaning toward selling them off and putting the money toward getting started with Grey Knights.

So can anyone explain to me what's going on with army rules and all? Are there or are there not plans to release the datasheets online? I mean, it worked pretty well for Age of Sigmar. Also, will the Indices be replaced with proper Codexes or...?

[up] Not sure about releasing the datasheets online, but I'd be very surprised if actual codices aren't starting to trickle out by the end of the year. Vanilla Astartes players are going to want some way to differentiate their chapters from each other, for starters.

I think I read somewhere that the current plan is to put the Datasheets for the units in the box with the models themselves. I am also unsure on whether they will be available to download but either way they will likely only have the basic Open Play rules, they are unlikely to have the narrative and matched play options.

Sorry for the double post but I have my 8th Edition stuff now and I thought I would share my initial thoughts on my first quick look through the Index Imperium 1 (Space Marines). I like that Apothecaries, Ancients (Standard Bearers) and Champions are now independent characters (as the first two were back in 2nd Edition). Interesting that Command Squads have been renamed Company Veterans but that was basically what they were anyway. I am a little disappointed that you can't take individual Deathwatch temies, bikers, etc. any more.

Haven't looked at the other books yet unfortunately.

[up] Deathwatch termies and bikes are units of 1 - 5, aren't they?

[up]They were. As of 8th Edition Index Imperium 1, they are 5 to 10 and 3 to 6.

I decided to go ahead and put together the Death Guard models to paint and try to sell later on. I got everything except the Foetid Bloat Drone completed in one night...the Poxwalkers are a breeze to assemble. On the other hand, the Malignant Plaguecaster was a huge pain because its torso/leg halves don't fit together intuitively at all and I found myself essentially trying to squeeze four pieces together at once to get it assembled. Also, I now have an appreciation for the pain Dark Eldar players must go through because I stuck my fingers who knows how many times on the sharp pointy bits on the models.

[up][up] Oh, that's true. I hadn't noticed.

I'm going to try out some Inceptors this weekend. Hopefully my opponents get a little careless with their Characters and I can drop in behind them to snipe them out.

Since I hear Rough Riders are good now, I wanna make a unit. Based on probably the most badass cavalry unit in recent history, who lead a charge bigger than even the Rohirrim.

The Winged Hussars.

Now I need to find minis for conversion.

A bit of checking turned up these, which are 1:72 scale.

If you don't mind metal, or paying twice the price of a small moon, years back GW did a Kislev Winged Lancers kit for WHFB. Unfortunately it has been out of manufacturing for ages now.

Failing that, I'm sure there are kits you could use to add back wings. Eldar Swooping Hawks, maybe?

An army that isn't Western and isn't based off some stereotype would be refreshing. Failing that, Frenchmen to break up the Latin/Russian/Germanic monotony.

WHEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!!!

For today’s 2nd Edition Thursday: Chaos Spawn

During 2nd Edition Chaos Spawn weren’t available as part of a regular amry list but there were optional rules that could be used, if both players agreed, that could turn a Chaos player’s models into Spawn during a game.

When rolling to see how many Warp Cards were generated at the beginning of the Psychic Phase, a roll of a 12 or more meant that one model could have been turned into a Spawn. The Chaos player rolled a D6 and if the score was less than the number total number of Chaos Space Marine Champions, Chaos Space Marine Sorcerers, Chaos Cult Magi, Chaos Cult Demagogues and Chaos Daemon World Warrior Champions, one of these characters (chosen by the Chaos player) was turned into a Chaos Spawn.

When turned into a Spawn the character was replaced with a sutably converted Spawn model and follows the following rules:

1 – The model lost all wargear, weapons, armour, equipment, Chaos Rewards etc. If the character was a psycker then it also lost its psychic level and psychic powers.

2 – The Chaos player rolled a D3 for each of the S, T, W & A stats and added the result to work out the Chaos Spawn’s new statline.

3 – After being turned into a Spawn, the model’s first move was directly forward 2D6”. Any model that the Spawn touched automatically took 1 hit for each of the Spawn’s attacks, worked out in the normal way. The Spawn was so enraged that enemy models couldn’t fight back.

4 – In subsequent turns the Spawn moved 2D6” in a random direction using the Scatter Dice, attacking any model it moved over, friend or foe, as above and couldn’t be attacked back.

5 – If it moved over a daemon model the Spawn wouldn’t attack as it recognised the daemon as a kindred creature.

6 – Enemy models couldn’t deliberately move into base contact with a Spawn in their own turn and if they touched the Spawn due to compulsory or random movement they were attacked by the Spawn as above.

7 – Chaos Spawn took a wound whenever a double was rolled for its random movement with the number of wounds taken being equal to the double rolled (a role of double 1 resulted in 1 wound, double 2 was 2 wounds etc.)

8 – Chaos Spawn could be wounded by shooting and psychic powers as normal but couldn’t be engaged in close combat in any way.

9 – Spawn moved randomly until they were killed or left the table.

10 – A character who became a Spawn didn’t count as a casualty for Victory Points purposes until it was killed or left the table.

Next week there probably won't be a 2nd Edition Thursday as I will be on holiday (I will probably still be online but I won't have access to my books).

There is a French-based IG regiment. Can't remember the name right now, but one does exist.

I am a nerd who posted in the wrong place.

Though while I'm here, the Mordian Iron Guard never struck me as particularly French. Just kind of generically Napoleonic-inspired,

Scintillians. THAT'S it, but they're Ancien Regime France, though.

On the other hand, they're really obscure, at least as far as vanilla GW is concerned.
