No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

[up]Not going to happen for financial reasons, since Guard is one of the highest volume armies, if not the highest; Tyranid players tend to stick with a handful of big bugs rather than the whole range, and Ork players tend to kitbash at least some of their vehicles and only buy the ones useful in tournament lists. Guard players tend to buy a huge number of stupidly expensive vehicles to go with buckets of infantry, and IG models also get used as base kits for numerous chaos conversions.

Squatting the Guard is never going to happen without annihilating the setting, they're just too widespread.

Now would be a good time to put the Cadians on the backburner and crank out a new model line for the Guard. Like the Valhallens or the Steel Legion.

That was my first impulse; look a couple of pages back.

Of course, what do you suppose the probability of GW actually doling out new plastic regiments are?

They're not going to squat the guard just because Cadia's going down. That would be a bit like having something terrible happen to Macragge and then withdrawing all Space Marine kits from sale.

As for new plastic regiments, I wouldn't bet on it - remember that Cadian-style equipment is used across the Imperium, and given their wide use, it's unlikely that all the Cadian regiments were on Cadia proper when the blue touch paper was lit.

It's just the planet going away. The Cadian regiments across the galaxy just have something to avenge now. Preferably with genetically enhanced, armored moose.

[up][up]Beyond the leaks I already know I think I will wait until I read the book (it should arrive on in the post Monday).

Anyway. Today I attended a one day Kill Team event at Warhammer World with my Fallen Chosen Kill Team. Six 30 minute games across one day was fun to do and although I lost all my games I had a very entertaining time.

The first game I played was against an Ulthwe Black Guardian army (10 Defenders with a Bright Lance and three Jetbikes). The scenario was Forward Push (1 Point per Objective). I was wiped out by the end of the second turn without killing a single thing due to my opponent's inability to roll less than a 6 for his Shuriken Bladestorm rule. The game was still entertaining though with the opponent being a cool guy.

The second game was against Ultramarine Sturnguard in a Razorback. The Scenario was Alone in the Dark (1 Point per Objective; Nightfight all game and a 3+ chance that models in your Kill Team gain Outflank). This was a better game that lasted the full length and I had a single model left by the end. My Heavy Bolter Chosen managed to slowly wear down the Razorback until it was wrecked but not before it killed my Plasma gunner with its Storm Bolter. My Lightning Claw Chosen killed a Sternguard to briefly claim an objective but he fled the battlefield when the Kill Team was reduced to less than half strength.

The third game was against a Kill Team made up entirely of Tzeentchian Screamers with the scenario being Infiltrate the Camp with me as the Attacker (the attacker gets 1 point for each model he gets off the Defender's table edge). This was another enjoyable game despite my Team being wiped out by repeated Vector Strikes. My Plasma gunner managed to wound one Screamer and kill another before being brought down while my Power Axe Chosen managed to bring down the wounded Screamer.

Game 4 was against 5 Death Guard Plague Marines in a Rhino accompanied by a Nurgle Spawn. The scenario was Secure the High Ground (1 point for each model in the central building at the end of the game). This was my favourite game of the day with the Death Guard gaining an early lead by gunning down my Leader, Heavy Bolter (although he killed the Spawn before dying) and Power Axe Chosen but my Plasma Gunner and Lightning Claw Chosen began to fight back, killing three of the Death Guard, including the Leader. I lost on the last turn when the Plasma gunner was finally shot down and the Lightning Claw Chosen fled the battlefield.

Game 5 was against a Storm Lord (White Scars Successor) Sternguard Squad accompanied by a Land Speeder Tornado. The scenario was Head Hunt (Kill the Leader and Specialists). This was the closest game of the weekend with the result being decided on the final turn when I failed to gun down his final Specialist with my Heavy Bolter. His Land Speeder was shot down by the combination of my Leader and Plasma gunner but I then lost my Leader to his Plasma gunner, who also killed my Lightning Claw Chosen. The Power Axe Chosen was gunned down by Overwatch fire while my Heavy Bolter took out the enemy Plasma Gunner. The most amusing thing to happen was when I got First Blood from one of his Sternguard's Special Issue ammunition overheating.evil grin

The final game was against 8 World Eater Bikers and was Supply Drop (6 Objectives but only one randomly determined one is worth any points). The game started off well when the supplies were dropped in my Deployment Zone but quickly went down hill when I my shooting failed to do anything at all. This allowed the World Eaters to close in and gun down my men before finishing off the last in close combat on the second turn.

Overall the event was fun and I learned a lot about what is effective in Kill Team (Numbers and AP3 weapons). I also picked up the reprint of the 1st Edition/Rogue Trader rulebook that is exclusive to Warhammer World this January, as well as the Triumvirate of the Imperium.

In other news, I got my copy of the Traitor Legions Codex Supplement. Some interesting stuff.

Also, I [lol]'d at the fact that the Khorne Lord of Skulls is 888 points.

My issue is this: Both the Kharn and Ahriman models speak to me, but I don't know which army I want to start building.

And I don't think pulling a Relic and doing Khornate Sorcerers is a good idea [lol]

@unknowing: Another thing people wanted since forever was for the plot in WHFB to progress. That led to GW trashing the setting and the rules and replacing both with staggeringly inferior substitutes. You can understand why people are a bit wary about them doing it again.

That said, 40K has generally been handled profitably by GW while WHFB was mismanaged spectacularly, and GW's management has changed since then, meaning I'm not actually worried about GW taking too much inspiration from the single worst ruleset it has ever released.

[up]we already talk about htis in the other thread: for me storm of chaos was the prove GW already locked their on setting right into the final chapter and they didnt have more to move forward, but as josh reynold said, the biggest thing regreating was rushing the entire thing which is something I did not get as GW is expert in draning your wallet slowly.

But anyway, the way GW is moving is little by little which is a good choice, we FINALLY see something here.

Age of Sigmar is hardly "staggeringly" inferior.

Then again I'm only into the setting for the lore and I actually really like the AOS lore.

Okay, so having looked through the Chaos Legions supplement (and seeing that the Ahriman was sold out and no information on when it's coming back in stock), I decided that I'll go with my original favorite chaos faction: Khorne

The Maelstrom of Gore seems like a good start, but I'd like recommendations for other stuff. Perhaps that "Getting Started: Chaos Space Marines" bundle they have on the GW site?

[up][up] I'm mostly talking about the rules, which to be fair were upgraded with the General's Compendium bringing in a functional army composition system to merely "below par for the industry in general and laden with weird issues" rather than "be honest you never actually playtested this did you".

I'm not exactly a fan of the setting, but I will admit it has some potential; whether they can bring it out is another matter.

[up][up][up]there is one point I will agree with dorkou is that GW seen to really like age of sigmar, pushing more content and expanding that setting and you can see some life there, if you compare that with the coldness of how they treat warhammer fantasy...yeah.

Anyway, well, I just read 3 short novels of horus heresy: Kryptos,Echos of the old night and Death of a silverman.

The first one is fairly simple, just a action moment between iron warrior and raven guard, is fast, straight foward and simple, I have yet to understand what used is the kryptos in future novel but well, time will tell.

The second is better actually, showing a grup of Death guard devastor squad(in charge of all the brutal weaponry) tracking a imperial fist ship, it show the devasting power of Mortarion legion and the end is very cinical in a way, granted I feel there is a certain violation of fluff since the protagonist was chaplain, didnt were murder first by the heretic element of the traitor legions? never the less you see the psicosis in them that led to nurgle.

Death of a silverman really feel like a short story and is very interesting since it show the thing like unification of terra, the great crusade and the start of the first book, it show that even the dark times there is room to do mundane thing like being a silver smith and how it move with the bigger setting

Also, the way he dies is sad and put a dark spin on the cult before erebus...but of that, I cant saidtongue

If there's one thing that I do hope they take from AOS for the next edition of 40K, it's the interest in opening up and exploring new visions of a cliche - the example I'll cite is the idea of imagining what dwarves would look like in a desert or jungle environment rather than the ALL MOUNTAINS ALL THE TIME of WHFB.

Mind you, my personal vision of the post-13th Black Crusade Imperium is a shattered collection of sub-Imperiums that would let humanity divide and thus give them a chance to have more diversity of kits, which may be a factor here.
