  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Will violent and abusive, or did he just get the short end of the stick and the Idiot Ball at the same time? Does he have anger management issues, or is he stressed by his upcoming hearing and the worst possible first day on the job? Is he sulking about the restraining order getting in the way of seeing his kid, or is he honestly angry at himself for what he did? Some combination of all these?
  • Awesome Music: The music that plays as 777 goes through the Stanton curve, where it's most likely to derail.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Ever wondered what would've happened had the train carrying toxic chemicals derailed? The 2023 Ohio train derailment resulted in mass evacuations of local residents as the chemicals burnt for two days, releasing toxic chemicals into the atmosphere and soil.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One news report of the CSX 8888 incident that inspired the movie had this dialogue, "It was like something you'd see in a Hollywood action movie, only this was no movie."
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Come on, like they would really kill a train full of innocent elementary schoolers on a field trip.
  • Narm: The "angry elephant roar" sound that applies almost literally in every single take the runaway train is given focus. It's definitely meant to be eerie and the destruction that ensues whenever it rams something emphasizes that it's a very great threat even without the attempt at anthropomorphism, but it quickly becomes very goofy.
  • Retroactive Recognition: T.J. Miller has a small role and became a lot more well-known in the years after this film.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: People have called this the true sequel to Speed or the second sequel to the movie that everyone wanted to see after the critical failure of Cruise Control.
