• Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: As with a lot of the Ultimate line, nearly all the "heroes" are insufferable jerks who are barely better than the malevolent beings they are trying to defeat. It's telling that the first instinct of the X-Men and the Ultimate team sent to explore the Russian bunker is to brawl rather than even attempting to reach an understanding.
• Harsher in Hindsight: There are a few moments with Reed Richards that are either a great moment of him growing a spine and standing up to Nick Fury, or being borderline obsessed with the Fermi Paradox, even with Sue practically climbing into his lap. These moments become more ominous in light of what Reed later becomes.
• Squick: The Ultimates are in the bunker, and find a tunnel filled with a brown substance.
  Nick Fury: That ain't what I think it is, right?
  Captain America: It's old, but yeah, it is. Droppings.
  • Then there's the Red Guardian's recreation of Cap's shield, made from human body parts.
• They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The reaction to Galactus being changed from a godlike, humanoid entity to a swarm of ravenous robots was...not great. Ditto the reception of the Silver Surfer's change from a reluctant villain who finds redemption to a group of mindlessly evil Elite Mooks, which is why a different version closer to the original was eventually introduced in Ultimate Fantastic Four.
