YMMV / Total Drama: Superstar Showdown

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Kavren; either you find his antics annoying or hilarious, though not as much as his last appearance since Kavren was an early out.
    • Puck is in the same boat; either he's hysterical or irritating. Some readers only find him funny when he's interacting with Wolfgang.
    • Layla's loss of her character development was this before the fic began; it's mostly died down now because she's still hilarious and the change is addressed in the story.
  • Broken Base: Was Wolfgang a satisfying and deserving winner, or was his win too obvious and should it have gone to Chelsey instead?
  • Crack Pairing: Early on before the first chapter was posted, readers began shipping Wolfgang with PJ nicknamed 'Silent Shipping' as well as...Britney Spears because of Wolfgang's new fashion sense.
  • Elimination Houdini: Arthur is the main one. Despite his awful personality, he's almost never targeted for elimination and makes it to the final six, where he only gets out thanks to a sudden death challenge. He's helped by the fact that his team keeps winning and has many other, even more obnoxious contestants. Of course, this being a fanfic, he makes it as far as he does because the author thinks he's funny.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Veronica quickly became one, for how well-developed a character she became compared to last time, along with her great interactions.
    • Chelsey, Flora and Layla were already one of these from their own respective stories, and potentially became even bigger ones with the focus and character development they received.
    • Wolfgang and Helga have become one for the couples out of all the stories, for having a really sweet romantic moment and being people not likely to be a couple.
    • Gail was quite loved for her one chapter appearance.
    • Roz, for being hilarious and fitting her role as host really well.
    • Wolfgang. His angry outbursts and Deadpan Snarker tendencies make him very liked, and he was seen as a great and deserving winner with a good story arc.
    • While Arthur used to be more of a Base-Breaking Character and is The Scrappy in-universe, nowadays Arthur is thought to be very hilarious by readers.
    • Even Trey is pretty well-liked, due to being a unique type of villain and a Jerkass Woobie, as well as switching between having a 'woe-is-me' attitude and being comically 'evil.'
    • Almost all the guest-starring family members from the first merge chapter count, for being hilarious or providing interesting insight into the cast.
    • Special mention goes to Charles, who had been requested to reappear and didn't disappoint.
    • Big Johnson, despite only appearing in the finale, easily gained a fanbase.
  • Fridge Logic: Layla wants someone to be her 'new Charles' or servant. If she's so rich, why hasn't she hired a new servant?
    • She might be unable to hire a servant while on the show. Or she doesn't just want someone hired, but someone who will do the job by choice and with dedication, similar to Charles.
  • Ho Yay:
    • For some, Kavren and Arthur.
    • You have to wonder why Chappy gave his friend the nickname "Big Johnson" in college...
  • Idiosyncratic Ship Naming: "Schnitzelshipping" for Helga and Wolfgang, because of their German origin names.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Trey. Despite being universally reviled by the cast (for good reason, too, as he's transparently rude and manipulative), being trapped on Tiki Island for a year really did screw him up mentally, and his last appearance features him pleading to Wolfgang to help him become a better person.
  • Memetic Mutation: Gail in general. Lampshaded when she becomes the star of an entire chapter: "If U Seek Gail."
  • One-Scene Wonder: All of the family members and Alejandro, as well as Big Johnson.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: Helgang for Helga x Wolfgang.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • While Gail did gain an ironic following some would still consider her a scrappy for being boring. But her new Ax-Crazy behavior made her a lot more popular.
    • While Veronica wasn't hated, she was hardly remembered (the author not even giving her a character page for sometime). Her new appearance her made her very beloved.
    • After becoming a wannabe of Devin, Ori was rescued when he regained his original character traits during the losers visit.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Trick wasn't liked that much already for how he and his girlfriend Cammy acted in Revolution, but his lying behavior and lack of humor made him this for a lot of people.
    • Ori for losing his more funny traits and basically being another Devin. However, this was temporary and his popularity went back up after the losers episode.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: All the pre-merge boots are generally agreed upon to be fitting, with two exceptions:
    • Chrissy, who was a major character and fan favorite in Total Drama: Tiki Jungle with an interesting personality and character design. After her plots with Julia, Helga, and Nic were rekindled, she was abruptly eliminated in a double boot in the tenth chapter, and ended up as a footnote.
    • Helga was a major character up until her boot, and the relationship with Wolfgang seemed like the first real plot she would get, but she was eliminated right after (see below). Downplayed however, as Helga's plot resumes during the losers special and the finale.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Wolfgang had been teased that he'd get a love interest. He and Helga finally hooked up in a very romantic scene, and with the elimination of Puck, it felt like a new start for Wolfgang. Than, Helga was eliminated next chapter, before we got to see fall-out of the relationship. Lampshaded later in story.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Wolfgang. While he had a few fans for being an early out with potential, he was the (relatively forgettable) third contestant voted off of Tokyo while the other contestants in the story either made it far or had memorable personalities.
    • Mackenzie was also a character people were shocked to see return, and even more shocked when she was fodder again.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: This is bound to happen in a story like TDSS, where most of the characters are incredibly unlikable in-universe.
    • Chelsey is "popular" in the sense that she wields a large amount of power at her high school, but most of the other contestants hate her. She's also one of the most beloved contestants in the story, and only returned in the first place because she was an Ensemble Dark Horse in her original story.
    • Layla makes Chelsey look incredibly likable - she's obnoxiously rich, snobby, and reviled by the contestants, but she's deemed as one of the funniest and most complex characters in the story.
    • Arthur's entire shtick consists of being as annoying as possible, and his only friends in-universe are equally obnoxious male characters. However, he's the main Plucky Comic Relief of the story, and is commonly thought to be a hilarious character.
    • Nic is worse than Arthur - his wannabe-Alejandro personality turns off almost the entire female cast, but to the readers, he's a very entertaining spoof on a major canon character.
    • Trey is the Big Bad of the story, spouts out played-up Wangst constantly, and is the only character in the story with zero friends, yet his villainy is so over-the-top that he's considered an enjoyable antagonist, and he's also genuinely sympathetic to some degree (see Jerkass Woobie).
