YMMV / The X-Files Game

Go To

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: The reveal that Cook was The Mole was made too obvious by his overly suspicious behavior.
  • Difficulty Spike: Most of your responses can be altered to be nice if you had been making Willmore become too much of a jerk (preventing a game over in most cases) and most of the suspicious characters can be avoided by just common sense or finding ways around them. By the 3rd and 4th disc of the game, the difficulty skyrockets where any mistake you make in responses will be your last, going to the wrong room can result in death, and there are at least two segments where you have to have your gun drawn at all times because enemies will pop out unexpectedly and they will kill you if you don't react fast enough.
  • Narm: The constant refrain of "Don't do that!" by NPCs that happens whenever the player is about to use a dangerous inventory item that would lead to a gameover. Since the response is generic, it leads to every situation of this becoming humorous instead of dramatic because the tone they use is like that of scolding a small child for acting out. It also creates the mental image of Wilmore just waving his gun or handcuffs around and being chided into putting them away.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Straddles the line between this and Paranoia Fuel. The soundtrack alone is terrifying.
  • Paranoia Fuel: If you're squeamish, don't choose the "paranoid" or "serious" options too much.
  • The Woobie: Between all of the messages from his ex-wife (nice or not) the suicide notes you can read if you shoot Wilmore in a cutscene and the guy's partner kicking the poor bloke's stomach in you have to at least feel a little bad for Wilmore. Coupled with a bit of a Tear Jerker, if you've read his diary and know how it ends.
