YMMV / The Simpsons S3 E9 "Saturdays of Thunder"

  • Common Knowledge: For those more familiar with The Simpsons: Road Rage and The Simpsons Hit & Run, you'll be surprised to learn that Bart's signature vehicle in both games, the Honor Roller, is actually made for (and by) Martin and not Bart himself as commonly assumed. Initially, Bart is racing against Martin in a completely different vehicle, he only starts using it when Martin gets injured, and even then, he uses it on Martin's behalf.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: A kid getting mauled by a shark? Horrible! But mention how this happens all the time? Hilarious!
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The praise for Bill Cosby's Fatherhood book can make for uncomfortable viewing in light of his rape trial and imprisonment, which is made even more uncomfortable with a couple of lines in particular:
Homer: If he's as smart as he is funny, I'm sold!
Homer: [while reading Fatherhood] Cosby's first law of intergenerational perversity...
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the opening credits, Bart writes "I will not fake rabies" on the chalkboard. An episode in the next season (after Bowdlerization) would have him do just that in order to get out of a test.
  • Memetic Mutation: The entire McBain scene.
  • Nausea Fuel: Nelson crushing out his cigarette on his tongue.
  • Signature Scene: The McBain movie clip, specifically the "Mendoza!" scream.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The VHS Village store (obviously a parody of Blockbuster) falls onto this knowing it became obsolete in recent years and replaced by streaming TV and internet services.
    • Also the McBain movie, which was parodying the violent R-rated action films of the 80s and 90s such as the "Rambo" movies, that type of film would later lose popularity to the more family-friendly CGI-heavy blockbusters.
    • Bill Cosby being treated as any sort of role model dates the episode to before his reputation was destroyed by the numerous rape scandals.
