- Audience-Alienating Premise: Much of the show's undoing came from its premise that portrayed being a Playboy Bunny as somehow being a liberating experience during the women's rights movement and change in gender attitudes in The '60s, which was seen as missing the point. As one reviewer for The AV Club stated in a review comparing the show with Pan Am:note Meredith Blake: […] [D]o I have to point out how dressing up in a skimpy rabbit costume is slightly more degrading than wearing a powder blue suit? […] [Y]es, The Playboy Club is about 10 times worse because it's actually pretending that being a bunny was somehow a liberating experience.
- Overshadowed by Controversy: Was short-lived mostly thanks to low ratings stemming from the controversies that the either the show was "pornographic", usually without having seen the show, or because of its premise that portrayed being a Playboy Bunny as somehow being a liberating experience during the women's rights movement in The '60s. The main actress, Amber Heard, was later swept up in her own controversy surrounding the Johnny Depp domestic abuse case, saddling her with an extremely negative public perception and tainting a lot of her earlier work, especially ones where she's using her looks to her advantage.
- Retroactive Recognition:
- Carrie Coon (Doris Hall) would go on to become more famous for playing Ben Affleck's twin sister in Gone Girl and star in Season Three of Fargo.
- Laura Benanti (Carol-Lynne), while already known at the time on the Broadway scene, would later become known to a broader audience for playing the dual role of Alura and her Evil Twin Astra on Supergirl (before Alura was recast in season three by Erica Durance due to scheduling conflicts), and for playing Melania Trump on comedy skits on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
