YMMV / The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The Missing, the game's main vocal theme. It's no surprise that it won the award for "Song, Original or Adapted" at the NAVGTR Awards.
  • LGBT Fanbase: The game has a firm LGBT fanbase because J.J. is a trans woman (with hints that she and Emily are some combination of ace and gay), who's portrayed sympathetically, and whose struggles with transphobia are played for horror (in stark contrast to the horror genre's use of trans, or trans coded, characters to unsettle audiences). It helps that Swery65 learnt from criticism of previous trans characters and did his homework.
  • Narm:
    • Some of the voice acting for J.J. can fall a bit flat due to Dull Surprise.
    • J.J. calling out to Emily can easily remind anyone familiar with Luigi's calls of "Mario, Mariooooooo?" from Luigi's Mansion. A game with a spooky atmosphere, but a much lighter tone.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The horrible injuries J.J. has to inflict on herself in order to progress through the game. While she turns into a silhouette to censor these to an extent, the animations make her movements look very painful, and her screams of agony are very convincing.
    • Near the end of the game, J.J. describes exactly what it's like to have a limb torn off in very graphic detail.
    • The final level of J.J. being outed to the school and bullied to suicide is nearly as horrifying as the more direct horror so far, especially for a trans person (if not more so for how grounded it is). Creating fake/mocking social media profiles using old photos under the victim's deadname is a common tactic used by real life transphobic bullies.
  • Values Dissonance: The closeness between J.J. and one of her professors can come across as a little odd to Western audiences, but isn't as unusual in Japan (where the game is made, if not set), especially at universities.
