YMMV / The Lucky Dime Caper

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: When Donald is sent on his quest, what he says depends on the game's version - In the prototype for the Sega Master System version, he's afraid until Scrooge offers a reward; in the final version he's determined to save his nephews, but just goes after the dimes because Scrooge offers him a reward and in the Game Gear version, Donald doesn't complain at all and later Scrooge rewards him out of kindness.
  • Anticlimax Boss: The final boss is a glass ball with the #1 Dime inside. Despite the unfair rains of randomly positioned and overly quick thunderbolts and bombs that Magica summons, the battle can be won almost instantly. The Game Gear version fixes this by making the table tall and unreachable, so you then have to switch between climbing to hit the crystal and avoiding the projectiles on the ground.
  • Awesome Music: Most of the game's music is very memorable.
  • Camera Screw: When you destroy the enemy generators at Andes Mountains, you must move back to the center of the screen to correct the camera's scrolling.
  • Demonic Spiders: Scorpions move quickly and erratically on the ground. Moreover, there are areas where they randomly fall from baskets on the ceiling while you're platforming.
  • Game-Breaker: The hammer beats all of the bosses in like 4 hits, turning several of them into zero effort fights. The disc is weaker, but you can fire it from afar without worry of risking yourself. It's no wonder you have to put effort in to keep them through the levels.
  • Goddamned Bats:
    • The bat enemies suddenly swoop from high and move around in a sinewave pattern. Pay attention to the top of the screen, as offscreen bats are actually barely visible there.
    • There are three kinds of club-wielding guys at Andes Mountains but they all look the same. You have to figure out what each one does as you go along and be careful to not approach them the wrong way.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games: Like the Mickey games, this is one of the classics of the Sega Master System.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • Some consider the Breakable Weapons in the Master System version this trope. To be fair, this mechanic works to balance the game, since either weapon is a complete Game-Breaker against any of the bosses.
    • In the Egypt level there are dead end rooms where Donald is kept trapped amongst respawning chest monsters until the ceiling finishes lowering itself (it won't crush Donald). One in particular lasts for an absurd amount of time, enough that the player would think the game has glitched out.
