YMMV / The Flower Collectors

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Since some of the characters' motivations aren't fully explored, their agency can lean one of many ways.
    • Padre Eusebio. An honest and religious man forced into working with Haussmann who wants Aldo to stay away from Melinda because he knows she'll get him in trouble with the police, or a Dirty Coward who keeps telling Aldo to keep his mouth shut because he doesn't want his involvement with Haussmann to ruin his career? Jorge and Melinda have nothing but contempt for the man (especially since he keeps telling Melinda not to talk to Aldo, who witnessed the murder), but Doña Anna defends him, saying that he's "just being a good shepherd, protecting his flock." Unlike everyone else, Eusebio is the only character whose intentions are never fully revealed, and by the end of the game, he's still a prominent member of the Catholic church.
    • Jorge. Is he helping Melinda because he's tired of how brutal and corrupt the police have become and he genuinely wants things to change for the better, or is he helping her out of shame for being involved in her brother's death and this is his personal form of atonement? On that same note, did Jorge really forget all the details pertaining to how Sebastiano died, and if he was one of the cops who beat him to death? The game gives you the option to lie or tell the truth, but when Jorge "tells the truth," he answers by reluctantly saying he can't remember what happened.
    • Melinda. Intrepid Reporter willing to bend the rules for the sake of the greater good who gets in over her head, or a self-serving, vengeful woman who goes out of her way to snoop into other people's business, even if they're innocent, if the end result is her catching the people who killed her brother and getting closure from it? The game leans towards the former (especially since Sebastiano is rarely brought up), but it's clear that her brother's death partly motivated her.
    • Diego. Is he a man who truly cares about Jorge and hates that he resorts to threatening to kill him just to keep his mouth shut? Is he a Dirty Coward who murdered the Mole because he was afraid of going to prison and/or what Haussmann would do to him if he refused? Is he an ambitious man who went along with killing the Mole to receive a promotion that Haussmann promised him? Or is he a true patriot who actually wants Spain to stay the way that it is and killed the Mole because he wants someone like Haussmann to keep things the way that they are, even if it means he personally has to get his hands dirty?
    • Even the Mole falls under this trope. Did he plan on leaking all of the information involving Haussmann's deeds to the press because he wanted to expose the country's corruption and improve Spain for the better? Did he dig up dirt on his fellow police officers and then turned on them solely for personal benefits? Or perhaps the Mole was content with working for Haussmann, but discovered he planned on betraying and killing him, so he intended to divulge all of Haussmann's dirty deeds even though he knew doing so would result in his death.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Diego was Evil All Along. Jorge only sees Diego once in the game, and conveniently after he does, police raid the plaza. It's very clear by this point that he is at least partially involved in what's happening and is trying to cover it up. When Diego runs into Jorge again in Chapter 9, he tells Jorge to "cut the bullshit" and doesn't even try to maintain his facade.
  • Complete Monster: Haussmann is a former member of the Policía Armada now seeking to become an elected official of Spain. As a police officer, Haussmann was in charge of a unit called the Flower Collectors, whose goal was to repress anyone who challenged or opposed the Nationalist Party. During his tenure, many officers wound up arresting or abusing hundreds of people over the span of three years; more than a dozen civilians were killed during the raids. After becoming a politician, Haussmann used his influence over the police to continue harassing and arresting activists and revolutionaries, even going as far as bribing a club owner to sell out her patrons and threatening anyone who knew of his illegal crimes to keep their mouths shut. When a former officer tries to release a list of victims Haussmann was responsible for killing to the press, he has the man murdered and attempts to silence all of the people who witnessed the crime.
  • The Un-Twist: Haussmann is a tall, imposing, black-furred rabbit who is constantly seen harassing Carmen. Jorge and Melinda later discover that he's a politician and has control over the police. And on top of this, he wears a suit—something Aldo witnessed the killer wearing the night of the murder. One would be expected to believe this is a glaring Red Herring, but no. Haussmann really is as corrupt as Melinda and Jorge think he is and he's responsible for the Mole's death. The actual twist is that Diego was the shooter, not Haussmann.
