YMMV / The Conners

Go To

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Many thought the show would fail and fall in ratings from the first episode with the loss of Roseanne Barr, with many of her fans who stuck by her side throughout her racism scandal wanting the show to fail, going so far as to flood sites such as IMDb with negative reviews and "1-star" ratings before the first episode even aired. Come the actual premiere, while not as big as its predecessor's launchnote , the show has maintained surprisingly good numbers (constantly winning or hanging with The Voice as the Tuesday winner of the all-important 18-49 demo), and has basically been well-received by television critics.
  • Broken Base: Between fans who prefer Darlene's dynamic with Ben and think that David is irredeemable after his actions during the Time Skip, and fans from the original series who will never accept anyone other than David as Darlene's true love and keep clamoring for him to return somehow, every year.
    • There is now a growing contingent that believes Darlene doesn't deserve either man considering how badly she treats them both.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The ending of Season 3 episode 6 seemed to have a reasonable ending with Becky promising to monitor the drugs tests so her trans coworker could feel comfortable while making sure no one is high on the job. The final scene, she says she has no intention of following through, even though they work at a plant that uses heavy machinery and the manager even rightfully pointed out they didn't want people operating it while high.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Harris was one of the least popular elements of the brief Roseanne revival — a walking caricature of Generation Z teens with the character depth of a kiddie pool. Here, her more obnoxious traits have been dialed back, and she's gained a snark akin to her mother at her age.
  • The Scrappy: Harris' former spot in the scrappy heap was taken in Season 1 by DJ's wife Geena, who thus far is shown as not only snarky, but also unpleasant, condescending and obnoxiously religious (example: telling Darlene in front of her son that she's going to Hell for believing in reincarnation shortly after Roseanne's passing; Darlene though, being Darlene, takes it in stride). Geena was Put on a Bus after the Season 1 and 3 finales due to actor unavailability.
  • Special Effects Failure: In "Premies, Weed and Infidelity", Becky gives birth to Beverly Rose prematurely. When we briefly see her in the arms of a nurse, she's clearly holding a doll.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: In season five's aptly-titled "The Grad Finale", the family discusses a location for a surprise party to celebrate Mark's graduation from high school. Jackie suggests The Lunch Box, but doesn't get much agreement. Becky claims that Jackie taking it over "tore the whole family apart" — something she felt way too comfortable to say, as she took Jackie's side in the fight to reopen it and has a job there, and Darlene reminds Jackie of drunkenly slapping her during that fight — right after the former brought up the heartbreaking cycle in the latter's life that Roseanne helped her get out of and straight-up called her "a loser and the bane of [her late mother's] existence". Louise even says that it's "a black hole of tragedy" — despite being manager. So yeah, their arguments sure don't hold water there.
