Trivia / The Conners

Go To

  • Actor Leaves, Character Dies: Roseanne is killed offscreen due to an opioid overdose.
  • Banned Episode: After complaints were made about "The Dog Days of Christmas" appearing to make a joke about the Waukesha Christmas Parade murders, ABC removed the episode from rotation in December 2022. It can still be viewed on streaming.
  • Billing Displacement: Quite a few here. John Goodman (Dan) gets top billing with an ever-prestigious “Starring” credit, but it’s actually Sara Gilbert (Darlene) who gets the most focus in terms of story and character development. Lecy Goranson (Becky) is a close second to Gilbert, but Laurie Metcalf (Jackie) is billed after Goodman. Most egregiously, Michael Fishman (DJ) who is pretty much a glorified extra these days, was billed fifth, until he was dropped from the show completely.
  • Cast Incest: Juliette Lewis plays David's girlfriend Blue in the second episode. She and David's actor Johnny Galecki played siblings Audrey and Rusty Griswold in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
  • The Character Died with Him: Zig-Zagged: In 2021, Ned Beatty passed away a few weeks before turning 84 and it's revealed that Dan's father Ed—who he played—passed away—though this episode actually predated that merely by a year.
  • Development Gag: At one point in the first episode, Becky tells Darlene that she's "the obvious choice to take over for [Roseanne]", in regards to helping run the household. The initial idea for what became The Conners was in fact a spinoff centered around Darlene.
  • Directed by Cast Member: Michael Fishman directed season 3's "Halloween and The Election vs. The Pandemic" and several season four episodes.
  • Disowned Adaptation: Roseanne Barr was predictably pretty upset with the show. What rather fewer people saw coming was her going so far as to get her rabbi to condemn the show for being unnecessarily grim in killing her off.
  • In Memoriam: "Trucking Live in Front of a Fully Vaccinated Studio Audience" ends with the cast standing around/holding up a sign reading, "Dedicated to the memory of our friend and colleague, Norm Macdonald."
  • The Original Darrin: Lecy Goranson plays Becky Conner-Healy throughout the run of this series.
  • The Other Darrin: Maya Lynne Robinson is the third overall actress to play Geena in this universe, replacing Xosha Roquemore from the tenth season of Roseanne, who replaced Rae'ven Larrymore Kelly in the original series.
  • Real-Life Relative: Ron and Janelle of Jackie’s throuple are played by then-husband and wife Clark Gregg and Jennifer Grey.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Sara Gilbert and Emma Kenney look like they could be mother and child in real life.
  • Underage Casting: Jane Curtin has been cast as the mother of Katey Sagal's character despite being only six years older than she is.
  • What Could Have Been: When talk about a potential spinoff of Roseanne first began surfacing, it was reported that ABC was considering centering the show around Sara Gilbert's Darlene character, possibly even naming the show Darlene. In the end, it was decided that the focus would expand to the overall Conner clan.
  • Written by Cast Member: Lecy Goranson received a story credit for season two's "Throwing a Christian to a Bear", and wrote season 4's "Triggered".
