- Complete Monster: "Fairy" Hardcastle, one of the chief members of N.I.C.E., and head of their Secret Police, is a former fascist who loves nothing so much as domination. Seeking to tear down and remake the world in pursuit of her group's vicious order, Hardcastle has many people abducted and tortured, often participating herself; it is implied that she even derives sexual pleasure from torturing. Capturing heroine Jane Studdock, Hardcastle tortures her, burning her with a cigar, and threatens to later do the same to her husband Mark.
- Spiritual Successor: To fellow Inkling Charles Williams' Descent Into Hell. Both books feature supernatural goings-on taking place in a quaint British town that turn out to be the work of demons, both have the demonic presence influencing and corrupting the well-educated, and both feature a tramp as minor, but important characters. The major difference between them is That Hideous Strength is a work of science fiction and Williams' Descent Into Hell is a fantasy thriller.
