YMMV / Sully

Go To

  • Memetic Mutation: "Never travel with Tom Hanks." Sully was the film that made reviewers start noticing that characters in Tom Hanks films always run into disaster when they travel: Joe Versus the Volcano, Apollo 13, Cast Away, Forrest Gump, Captain Phillips, The Terminal, even all four Toy Story films! note
  • Nightmare Fuel: Seeing the terrified passengers about to crash, braced against their seats, contacting their loved ones and preparing themselves for death, is chilling.
    • Of course, knowing all the passengers survived with minor injuries lessens the scare factor.
    • Also Nightmare Fuel for the various bystanders that see a low-flying plane over Manhattan. The real life event took place with 9/11 still very much fresh in the minds of New Yorkers, meaning those "Oh, Crap!" expressions aren't for those on the plane, it's thinking another terrorist attack is underway.
  • Tear Jerker: Especially for viewers who have been through a traumatic event.
    • "Hey, maybe when I wake up, it'll be January fourteenth. Wouldn't that be good?"
    • The reactions of New Yorkers who are almost certainly having flashbacks watching the plane as it descends.
    • The moment the Thomas Jefferson pulls up to the plane and the music kicks in.
    • "Talked to Dan Britt, Sully. Got a count. 155."
    • "You know, it's been a while since New York had news this good." sad smile "Especially with an airplane in it."
      • In addition to the obvious, there have been several crashes in the New York area that had killed lots of people. Most notably in this case are the two post-9/11 crashes of one commercial aircraft shortly after 9/11, and the 2006 General Aviation crash that killed Cory Lidle, the latter crashing into an apartment in foggy weather due to pilot error.
      • On November 12, 2001 an American Airlines flight crashed into a neighborhood a stone's throw away in Long Island. Killing everyone on board and several on the ground. You can just imagine what everyone thought.
        • The saddest irony, where Sully & Stiles had been trained properly? The first officer here had been subjected to a training for something that it turned out couldn't really happen & since the 'solution' wasn't something pilots did in the real world outside this one class, no one realized that the maneuver could rip the tail rudder clear off...
