YMMV / Starship Titanic

  • Dancing Bear: The sheer depth of how interactive the 'Bots were formed a huge part of the promotional material. At the time, most adventure and role-playing games offered very limited conversation trees, and fully free-form conversations were unheard of.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Leovinus' closing message at the end of the game can lose its humor when considering who played him and what happened to him after the game was finished. A YouTube video of the clip in question even lists it as "Douglas Adams Eulogy?"
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Another Starship Titanic went wrong in the Doctor Who Christmas special "Voyage of the Damned".
      • Given Douglas Adamsā€˜ place within Doctor Who culture (and that Russell T. Davies specifically is enough if a fan to have written Hitchhikers Guide introductions) this is certainly a knowing reference rather than fun coincidence!
    • Futurama did the same thing in "A Flight To Remember" but it was more a parody of Titanic (1997) Recycled In Space.
    • The music room puzzle was designed by Douglas Adams himself, and the idea of an automated band of instruments wouldn't be seen until Animusic a few years later.
    • The third class entertainment room, a small cupboard like place where you can stare at a painting and listen to music, sounds a lot like the Amazon 'wellness chamber' doesn't it?
  • Serial Numbers Filed Off: The novel seems to be going out of its way not to mention anything from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series that the game spun off of. The translation blisters are the equivalent to Babel fish and the Titanic has an unnamed method of Faster-Than-Light Travel instead of a prototype Infinite Improbability Drive.
