YMMV / Space Sweepers

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: Captain Jang's hairstyle was suggested by Kim Tae-ri herself. She reasoned that with Jang being stuck on a spaceship with limited water rations, it would make sense that her hair would be greasy and slick from days of going unwashed.
  • Cliché Storm: While entertaining, the film does suffer from a variety of cliches, at least to a Western audience. Namely, the utopian CEO of a MegaCorp being the Big Bad of the film would be obvious to anybody with experience in the Cyberpunk genre, many a Disney Death make the characters' sacrifices and efforts lose their sense of risk, their schemes near the end of the film seem like the characters are donning their Plot Armor, Tiger Park's axe is an obvious Chekhov's Gun, and The Cavalry arriving to save the day at the end of the film are easily predictable or overdone going into the film.
  • Complete Monster: James Sullivan, the oldest and wealthiest man alive, is the founder of the UTS and the one spearheading the attempt to terraform Mars into an Eden of his own design. Making every effort to be seen as the philanthropist savior of humanity, Sullivan is actually a rabid Knight Templar who has relegated most of humanity's population to lives of poverty and misery back down on the polluted Earth, while secretly harboring even worse intentions of exterminating all life on Earth by forcing a massive Colony Drop on it. Sullivan has his UTS soldiers massacre everyone in their way in his attempt to get at a little girl named Kang Kot-nim—aka "Dorothy"—who can control nanobots, ordering Kot-nim's father killed alongside every member of a peaceful environmental group that Sullivan has already framed as would-be terrorists. A proponent of eugenics, Sullivan demonstrates his ideas on genetic superiority by forcing a reporter to "prove" his true moral disposition by executing a captured prisoner with the promise the reporter's family will get to go to Eden—just before Sullivan murders the reporter with a huge smile.
  • Magnificent Bitch: Jang Hyun-sook is The Captain of the sweeper ship the Victory. A former Child Prodigy forced into a life of piracy after an assassination attempt on the evil James Sullivan, Jang takes to cleverly winning cargo for her crew until they stumble upon the young matter manipulating girl Kang Kot-nim aka "Dorothy". Outwitting a space policeman to escape with the stowaway, Jang charmingly gathers the universe's sweepers in a plot to trick Sullivan into thinking he'll capture Dorothy, exposing his plans to eradicate the Earth before killing him and getting rewarded handsomely for her efforts.
  • Narm Charm: Kot-nim farting at the end of her Heroic RRoD from controlling the nanobots to repair the Victory should be a ridiculous scene, but at the same time, it's a huge relief to know that Kot-nim is still alive.
  • Spiritual Adaptation:
    • Many compared the movie to be better Cowboy Bebop than Netflix's own adaptation.
    • Also to Planetes, which both dealt with workers who deal with debris in space.
