- Hilarious in Hindsight: In this special, Dr. Robotnik dresses up as Santa Claus in an attempt to steal Christmas, in a similar vein to The Grinch, who even starred in a live-action series that coincidentally aired the same year. Jim Carrey would later portray both the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and its sequel.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: A lot of fans of Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) feel this way about Princess Sally's treatment in this special. Due in part to Kath Soucie's contractual obligation of voicing Lola Bunny in Space Jam, she was unable to reprise her role as Sally, and as a result, Sally gets absolutely no speaking lines and plays very little role in the plot. Even worse, as of this writing, this remains her last appearance in animation, with her only surviving in Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics) until that book got cancelled in 2017.
- Watch It for the Meme: Similar to the "Snooping as usual, I see!" scene from "Boogey-Mania", many memers watch this special for the "Happiness is always so much more enjoyable when it's based on the misery of millions" scene.
- Woolseyism: In the French dub, the names "Robotnik Claus" and "Sonic Claus" are replaced by the punnier "Robotnikolas" and "Sonicolas", combining the characters' names with "Saint Nicholas".
