Go To

The twenty-seventh episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Professor Von Schlemmer invents a Dream-a-Majig that can bring characters from one's dreams into reality. When Robotnik finds out about this, he captures Von Schlemmer and reprograms the machine to unleash a nightmare monster upon Mobius.

TrrroPING AS usual, I see?

  • Acid Reflux Nightmare: The knowledge that Tails has these sometimes is what propels the resolution of this episode.
  • And Knowing Is Half the Battle: In the "Sonic Says" segment, Sonic lets Tails stay up to watch the late late night show. The next day, Tails is too tired to go hiking. Sonic talks about the importance of getting a good night's sleep and how not getting enough sleep can ruin one's whole day.
  • Bag of Kidnapping: Coconuts manages to trap Tails in one in an unsuccessful attempt to get on Robotnik's good side.
  • Balloon Belly: Tails is forced to eat tons of junk food (although he's rather happy to do so) in order to create a dream creature to combat a nightmare monster, and ends up massively bloated, triggering the Growling Gut trope to happen to him.
  • Clown Car: The clown from Professor Von Schlemmer's dream travels in one. When Scratch and Grounder steal the Dream-a-Majig, they use it to travel back to Robotnik's fortress.
  • Dreams vs. Nightmares: Professor Von Schlemmer invents the Dream-a-Majig, a machine that takes creatures from the dreams of whoever puts it on and brings them to the real world. Von Schlemmer demonstrates by summoning a Non-Ironic Clown. However, Robotnik kidnaps Von Schlemmer and uses the Dream-a-Majig on himself to summon a creature from his nightmares, simply called the Boogey Man, so it can terrorize Mobius. Sonic and Tails save the day by using the machine on Tails to create a stronger creature from his food-themed dreams.
  • The Dreaded Toilet Duty: Robotnik makes Coconuts clean out his sewers as punishment for capturing Tails instead of Sonic.
  • Dream Land: Dreamsville. Its ruler is the Dream Meister, who controls the dreams of Mobius in a fashion similar to a telephone operator.
  • Edible Ammunition: The monster that Tails summons to battle the Boogey Man has cannons that shoot mustard and ketchup.
  • Every Man Has His Price: Robotnik almost quotes this trope by its name when offering Professor Von Schlemmer diamonds in exchange for converting his Dream Machine into a Nightmare Machine. Von Schlemmer instinctively accepts, but then reconsiders.
  • Fancy Camping: At the beginning of this episode, Sonic decides to set up camp, and brings in an entire kitchen set.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: The citizens of Mobius run from the Boogey Man, clad only in these due to the Boogey Man scaring them out of their pants.
  • Popcorn on the Cob: At one point, a farmer is harvesting corn, when the Boogey Man zaps the corn, turning it into popcorn.
  • Pun: When Tails arrives in Dreamsville, he sees a bunch of clocks flying away, and says, "Time sure does fly around here!"
  • Rule of Three: Coconuts gets punished and sent down trap doors by Robotnik three times; the first time for not bringing back the Dream-a-Majig after telling him about it, the second time for capturing Tails instead of Sonic, and the third time for trying to tell him that Sonic is trying to stop him.
  • Sleep Aesop: In this episode's "Sonic Says" segment, Tails tells Sonic that he wants to stay up late to watch a TV show. Sonic allows him to do so but warns him that the next day, he may be too tired to go hiking if he does. The next day, Tails is indeed too tired and becomes sick with the flu, so Sonic lets him catch up on his sleep and tells the audience that not getting enough sleep can leave you too tired to do the things you want to do.
Sonic: Not getting enough sleep can ruin your whole day.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: This exchange when Scratch and Grounder enter Robotnik's fortress:
Robotnik: Snooping as usual, I see?
Scratch: Not me! I didn't hear nothing about Von Schlemmer's Dream-a-Majig.
Grounder: Uh, me neither-especially I didn't hear the part about the clown!
  • Taken from a Dream: Professor Von Schlemmer's Dream-a-Majig is able to take creatures from the dreams of whoever wears it and brings them into the real world. He demonstrates it by summoning a Non-Ironic Clown from his dreams. When Robotnik finds out about the Dream-a-Majig, he gets Scratch and Grounder to kidnap Von Schlemmer so that he can use the Dream-a-Majig to summon the Boogey Man, a creature from his nightmares, to terrorize Mobius.
  • Trap Door: Robotnik sends Coconuts down one three times. The first two times are in his fortress, after telling him things he should have done to make him happy. The third time, Robotnik has a mobile trap door with Hammerspace inside it, which he has Scratch and Grounder bring when Coconuts tries to warn him about Sonic.
  • The Unfavorite: Coconuts' status as this is perhaps best exemplified in this episode. Whenever he tries to do something to get on Robotnik's good side, it always backfires on him. When he tells Robotnik about the Dream-a-Majig, Robotnik reprimands him for not bringing it back to him and demotes him to Scrub Monkey Third Class. When Coconuts captures Tails (something Robotnik praises Scratch and Grounder for in other episodes), Robotnik reprimands him for not capturing Sonic and makes him clean a five-mile sewer. When Coconuts warns Robotnik that Sonic is trying to outsmart him, Robotnik sends him down a mobile trap door that Scratch and Grounder bring.
  • Warm Milk Helps You Sleep: One of the things Sonic, disguised as a doctor, does to get Robotnik to fall asleep so he can send the Boogey-Man back into his nightmares is give him warm milk.
  • Wild Take: The farmer does this when he sees the Boogey-Man. His eyes bug out of his head and he runs out of his overalls.

"Snooping as usual I see?"

The memetic "PINGAS" scene: Robotnik asks if Scratch and Grounder were listening in to his conversation with Coconuts, and they try to deny it but fail.

How well does it match the trope?
