  • Awesome Music: The opening song is incredibly catchy, combing it into both a tribal theme and a school anthem. It's helped that it's sung by all the senriyus.
  • Die for Our Ship: In a rare instance for a protagonist, a good number of people would like to pretend Jin does not exist, so that Hitomi can get together with Yena and/or Anne. It doesn't help that not only does Hitomi have a good amount of Les Yay with both girls (and it's shown that she's possibly not exactly against the idea), but Jin himself isn't exactly well-liked among both the audience and in-universe.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Miyubi for her tendency to die on a regular basis which has reached Memetic Mutation status (see below), and also being an adorable sloth girl.
    • Yena, by virtue of being a badass and non-heinous hyena character similar to Jasiri. As well as his feelings for Hitomi.
    • The dinosaur and pterosaur teachers for not only obvious reasons but their tendency to shift from mild-mannered to threatening if their students are unreasonable.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Seton has a mild one with Beastars, as some fans of the latter tend to describe the former as "Beastars but for cowards".note
  • Fan Nickname: "My Gym Partner's a Monkey: The Anime", because, well... see Friendly Fandoms below.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With folks who remember the 2000s cartoon, My Gym Partner's a Monkey, which had a similar premise of a human kid in a school full of animals. Some are even calling Seton the anime equivalent of it (though of course Seton goes a little more in-depth with its animals than MGPAM).
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Miyubi, dear lord. The girl dies on such a regular basis that it's becoming a meme in itself. It gets to the point her fans will imitate the narrator and say among the lines of "If she finds out she has fans, she dies!!". It gets to the point where Manako, a Tarsier who frequently commits suicide on a daily basis, is her eternal rival of dying a lot, or that Manako is "stealing" Miyubi's gimmick of dying a lot.
    • Hello Darkness my old friend...note
  • Most Wonderful Sound: Kana the beluga whale's true singing voice, which sounds like it should be in a Space Opera.
  • Narm Charm: The closing theme (badly) sung by Ranka is pretty much this generation's Nyasu no Uta, amateurish but at the same time strangely heart-rending.
    • Also whenever Jin finds himself on the receiving end of a male's affections.
  • Spiritual Antithesis: Serves as this towards Monster Musume. Both are manga setup around the premise of a human guy surrounded by non-humans that explores different aspects of their species each chapter. However, Monster Musume is a hardcore Ecchi harem manga focused primarily around the core group, and whose main protagonist, Kimihito, is a Nice Guy towards monster girls yet clueless about their lifestyles and learns more about them over time; whereas Seton is a more subdued Slice of Life manga that explores more than just the main characters, and whose main protagonist, Jin, is a Jerkass (with an extremely well hidden heart of gold) that despises animals yet is an animal expert and often educates the animal students about their own species.
  • Squick : The scene where 3 bears try to sexually assault Hitomi (a Bunny-girl in the manga). Especially since the bears are very feral-looking (they essentially look like regular bears walking on their hind legs)
  • Strawman Has a Point: Despite Jin's Fantastic Racism towards animals, his repulsiveness towards Ranka isn't entirely unjust. In addition to the two being different species, Ranka's behavior was no better in the first episode as she shows hostility until being given food and forcefully inducts Jin into her pack despite his reluctance while being an extreme Clingy Jealous Girl towards Hitomi (not to mention being loud). Jin's reaction by lashing on her later on is basically what a normal man would do, especially if one were to replace Ranka with a similarly obsessive human girl.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: It's never really explained why humanity's numbers have plunged to near extinction levels, how animals evolved into anthropomorphic beings, or even how their society works (e.g. how do predator and prey species coexist without one eating the other, or where the carnivorous species get their meat from, etc.).
  • Trans Audience Interpretation: Yena Madaraba the spotted hyena is biologically female, but spent most of his life believing he was male due to female hyenas having pseudopenises. He originally reacted with violence to anyone — including his own father — referring to him as a girl, vehemently insisting that he was a man. After Jin Mazama forces him to accept that he is female, Yena very briefly dabbles in being more feminine but decides that being true to himself means going back to wearing men's clothing. This, combined with him having a romantic interest in Hitomi Hino, have led many fans — particularly Western ones — to happily claim her as trans representation — as well as TV Tropes' pronoun and identity discussion thread ruling to use masculine pronouns to refer to him.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The show tries painting Jin as the Straight Man with an understandable excuse for his Fantastic Racism... except that his excuse is he, an expert on animals, picked a fight with three bears in his ickle, foolish youth, and held a grudge against the wolf he tried saving for treating his woundsnote . Add to that his nasty personality to animals not involved in any way with the incident and his creepy possessive tendencies regarding Hitomi, to the point where he has fantasizes about forcing animals out of the school and into the wild or outright killing and torturing them while Hitomi fawns over him, and people aren't terribly sympathetic when things don't go his way. This reaches a breaking point when Jin confirms to Ranka that yes, he really does hates animals, which breaks her heart and makes her cry. To say that fans were not pleased is putting it mildly.
