YMMV / Saved by the Bell: The New Class

Go To

  • Fanon Discontinuity: The show is not particularly liked due to the cast being Suspiciously Similar Substitutes. The fact that many of its storylines were recycled from the original didn't help matters either.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A running plot thread of Season 1 involves Scott fitting in with his new school and the season finale ends with him giving a heartwarming tribute to his new friends. By the time Season 2 starts Scott, Weasel and Vicki have vanished and are completely forgotten about by their closest friends, while out of universe, their actors were fired. This makes the optimistic statements of the early episodes seem harsher both on an in-universe and meta level.
    • In a particularly eerie example of this trope the first of the tie-in novels written by Beth Cruise (who also wrote novel tie-ins for the original series) was Trouble Ahead which had Scott temporarily go blind due to an eye infection and though it isn't really played comedically it is treated fairly lightly with Scott trying to prevent his friends finding out. The only character who does know and who helps him around during this period is Weasel, whose actor Isaac Lidsky subsequently did go blind.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Seeing the interactions between Screech and Mr. Belding in old episodes like "Operation: Zack" and "Earthquake" set the course of their relationship in The New Class. Furthermore, of all the main cast, Dustin Diamond has said that Dennis Haskins is the only person with whom he keeps in regular contact.
    • In "Guess Who's Running the Max" in 1998, it's revealed that Eric's real name is Cornelius, which he sees as an Embarrassing First Name. In the Boy Meets World Series Finale "Brave New World", which aired in 2000, we find out exactly the same thing about the show's main character Cory. And coincidentally, Boy Meets World also has a character named Eric in it.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Season 1's Suspiciously Similar Substitutes galore.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Many people's reaction to this show since it doesn't focus on the well-known original characters. Also combined with It's the Same, Now It Sucks! since many characters are expies and some plotlines are similar.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Gordon from the episode "The Fifth Wheel". He's a good-looking kid with genuinely sweet admiration for science but the gang reacts to everything he says like he's an annoying loser. He comes across as Adorkable, but the writers treat him as if he were one of the stereotypical nerds that frequent the show.
