YMMV / Sadako vs. Kayako

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Keizo and Tamao. It is quite easy to find fanart of them.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Quite a few people have complained that the hyped up fight between Sadako and Kayako is very one sided, with Kayako on the losing end. Sadako sucks Toshio into the TV, throttles Kayako, gouges out one of her eyes, and then explodes Kayako's head by forcibly making eye contact. Kayako, conversely, is only able to attack Sadako by pouncing on her — which results in the above attack — and by crushing the cursed video cassette, which only pisses Sadako off. While this might seem unfair, it should be noted that the two onryo are very different from each other. Sadako was hinted at being an incredibly powerful psychic that was genuinely bloodthirsty from the start. Meanwhile, Kayako was a relatively normal person who was transformed out of anger and pain, with the biggest thing fueling her is her grudge. Basically, Sadako has the means to effectively attack another onryo, but Kayako’s rage is so strong that it prevents her from disappearing.
  • Moment of Awesome: The exorcist, without going into the house, blesses a baseball and pelts Toshio with it, eliciting a catlike shriek from the boy.
  • Shocking Moments: The ending. One word: Sadakaya. When this movie came out, nobody knew how it would end, obviously. That being said, who would’ve expected it to end by having Sadako and Kayako, of all things, fuse into a single entity? Also, since thousands of people have watched the video, the curse is now worldwide and nigh-unstoppable.
  • Spiritual Successor: To Freddy vs. Jason. Two horror movie icons set up against each other on the big screen, the fact that one or both of the antagonists have been mostly forgotten for a while in-universe, AND of course the Let's You and Him Fight between the two ghouls. Also, both movies are pure, (mostly) unadulterated Fanservice to fans of both sides of the conflicts.
