YMMV / SHUFFLE!

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Rin has hardly any reaction to both his parents dying at the same time, compared with Kaede's near-fatal Heroic BSoD after losing her mother. Considering he took the blame for their death, he needed to avoid having a reaction. Otherwise Kaede may have figured out that Rin was lying and think it's all her fault.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Kaede. Part of the fandom despises her for how she treated Rin in the past and her Yandere tendencies in the presentnote  and believes she doesn't deserve to get together with Rin, seeing her serving him as being done for selfish reasons. Others sympathize with her and believe she is merely trying her best to make up for what she has done and make him happy.
  • Critical Backlash: Fans in Japan were PISSED over what the anime did to Kaede, making her a yandere when she was simply the "girl next door" character in the VN. In fact a few years back the imageboard 2ch did a poll on what were the top 10 biggest mistakes the anime industry made, and the Shuffle anime ranked at #6 with the reasoning being solely what it did to Kaede. For reference the show that barely managed to edge out the #5 spot against it was Dragonball GT, a show so infamously bad it tanked the domestic side of a massive franchise in Japan for nearly a decade.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Asa's mom Ama is pretty popular, considering she is a heroine's mother instead of a heroine herself.
  • Growing the Beard: If you don't like the series as it is stuffed with random gags, don't worry, there's a nice pile of drama later on just for you.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Itsuki calling Rin a "cradle robber" for being close to Primula in the anime's English dub becomes more horrific when another Todd Haberkorn character, Nobuyuki Sugou, tries to rape Asuna Yuuki, also a Cherami Leigh character, in Sword Art Online.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: When Itsuki (voiced by Todd Haberkorn in the English dub) first encounters Primula (voiced by Cherami Leigh), he asks her about going out on a date with him. Then, Daimidaler the Sound Robot was released in December 2015 in North America, and Shouma Ameku and Kiriko Kiyuna (also voiced in English by Haberkorn and Leigh, respectively) go out on dates.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Everything Kaede does when she Took a Level in Jerkass is because of her believing Rin was indirectly responsible for her mother's death. She later matures into a classic Woobie.
  • Les Yay: Kaede and Sia in the credits of the final episode. Accidental Kiss is involved.
  • Memetic Mutation: Flat Is JusticeExplanation
  • Never Live It Down: A lot of people won't easily forget Kaede's Yandere phase in the anime, despite the fact that not only did it not happen in the original visual novel, but she and Asa actually get along apart from this incident.
  • Nightmare Fuel: If Eye Screams do it for you. Almost all of this involves Kaede.
  • Shipping: As with most Harem Anime, there are numerous Rin/pick-your-girl fangroups on the Internet.
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat: There is quite a bit of this in the fandom.
  • Signature Scene:
    • Kaede attacking Asa.
    • Kaede dropping a boxcutter onto Rin's eye.
  • Squick: In Shuffle! Memories, Rin and most of the cast Eustoma's ship in the sea of the world of the gods. The girls ask Rin if he wants to swim in the pool, and he refuses. Eustoma, thinking he needs to be "cheered up" pulls a lever, which unleashes a flood of eels into the pool.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The setting of this world (two worlds different from our own are connected to ours) is pretty interesting but is hardly explored in any magnitude of depth and offers little to the show other than the magic powers which serve as plot points occasionally (not to mention the funky ears). For a world with Humans, Devils and Gods intermingling and all the main characters attending an academy where magic is an academic subject, very little seems all that different from the standard harem fare.
    • The joining of our world with those of the Gods and Devils is rife with so much potentially compelling conflict that it alone could easily be the basis of an entire series. But in Shuffle, first contact is left completely in the background, and interspecies integration occurs in ONLY a single decade without any problems whatsoever. Seeing everyday how much trouble we have with getting along even with members of our own species, the lack of complications with elvish extra-dimensional humanoids can be particularly jarring.
      • It's revealed in Really? Really! that there was a war between the humans and the Gods/Devils, as well as that Verbena (the academy the cast goes to) is unique, attracting attention from all over the world for having all three races in it. Sadly, it's still left alone after revealing that there were issues with it.
    • Of all the girls from whom Rin must choose, Primula gets the least screentime and Character Development in the anime adaptation, especially when compared to her route being the longest, concluding one in the game. This is probably due to being the most controversial route for an Anime adaptation.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Some people don't like how Rin ignores Kaede shortly after starting to go out with Asa, since it only ends up making her issues worse and giving the impression that he doesn't care about her.
  • Woolseyism: The dub is quite highly regarded. Many Woolseyisms are present, such as enacting the One-Steve Limit by replacing Nerine's nickname of "Rin-chan" with "Rina", keeping the alliteration in the fanclub names but making them ridiculously pompous instead of cutesy [eg. "Suki Suki Sia" becoming "Sexy Sia Soldiers"] and rewriting a lot of the jokes to make them funny to the western ear, just to name a few. The scene in which Asa gets Rin to call her "Asa-san" instead of "Asa-senpai" gets written entirely, since he and Kaede have always just called her "Asa" in the dub.
