YMMV / Problem Children are Coming from Another World, aren't they?

Go To

  • Awesome Ego: Izayoi is the most arrogant and violent out of the main cast, and is so overpowered as a character that he a) makes defeating a water god look easy at the end of the first episode, b) barely breaks a sweat when he completed a Gift Game in one night that according to Kurousagi would have taken years, c) makes a crater by simply flicking a pebble, and d) kicks and breaks a Slow Laser in half. However, the sheer craziness of those feats, his nonchalant way to carry himself, and the in-universe reactions to it are all so hilarious that it essentially Crosses the Line Twice and makes him perversely entertaining to watch.
  • Badass Decay: Being sealed away and subjugated by Lauis has greatly reduced Algol's strength.
  • Escapist Character: The titular problem children and especially Izayoi can be considered this - they are beautiful, smart, super strong and have awesome adventures, yet aren't annoying and generally mean well.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With No Game No Life due to their similar premise where the main characters are transported to another world and changes said world through games.
  • Les Yay:
    • Asuka wants you to know Kurousagi's sexy legs belong to their group.
    • Shiroyasha wants to buy Kurousagi's sexy legs and boob snuggle. In a hot spring, she describes, in lavish detail, the appeal of Asuka's body until she is knocked out by Asuka.
    • When Asuka asked to be You's "candidate number one" for friendship, they got a pink bubble background.
  • Memetic Mutation: Best girl is You. explanation
  • Moe: Leticia is super cute. But she can still kick your ass hard.
  • Moment of Awesome: Izayoi. he curbstomps a water god, shatters Slow Lasers with a kick, and tosses skyscrapers at the Third Cosmic Velocity.
    • How does he win a Gift Game that required a lake but none are in the area? Destroy the nearby waterfall and make one.
  • Narm Charm:
    • While typically considered a So Okay, It's Average anime by casual viewers, many people from the Mondaiji fanbase love it precisely for the way the series doesn't take itself seriously without entering the parody field at the same time. Its main characters qualify more as cool than well written, its algorithm of power is erratic enough to have a protagonist curbstomping a villain boss at the first episode, and its general tone resembles more a light novelist's dream than a light novel itself - and that is part of the series' charm.
    • Izayoi is so ridiculously overpowered that most of his battles have him deliver a Curb-Stomp Battle to whoever's facing him, and if he seems to have any trouble, it's usually because he allows them do it before utterly crushing them. However, as put in Awesome Ego above, what might look like an incredibly mismanaged character becomes actually a source of enjoyment and/or hilarity for those very reasons.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: All the titular problem children in the anime. Despite their narrative role of being benevolent heroes to Kurousagi's No Name community, there are many instances where they do not live up to this. Izayoi outright states he does everything for his own amusement, Asuka has a strong sense of morality but has no problem with invoking Pay Evil unto Evil, almost to the point of Knight Templar, and You doesn't care about much other than animals and making friends. They do grow out of these attitudes to an extent in the light novels, as while they still do whatever they want, it is clear they grow to care about the No name community - but in the anime, it looks like they are only helping to either entertain themselves or for their own egotistical reasons.
  • Values Dissonance: Black Rabbit is forced into wearing skimpy clothing by her employer and is constantly sexually harassed. This is Played for Laughs. No one could exactly help it either, since Shiroyasha is a goddess after all.
  • The Woobie: Poor Kurousagi, constantly being mistreated by the children. She really needs a hug sometimes.
