YMMV / Power Rangers Cosmic Fury

Go To

  • Adorkable: Fern is absolutely giddy when she gets to be part of a Power Rangers adventure, gasping in awe at how she's on a Zord with her girlfriend. When she becomes a Power Ranger, the first thing she notes is that she needs to come up with a quippy one-liner.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Between the end of Episode 2 and start of episode 3, Fern doesn't look that traumatized for having been teleported 30 million light years away from Earth, learning that Izzy's brother is also a Power Ranger who has a prosthetic arm, or that there are aliens ready to conquer Earth.
  • Complete Monster: Bajillia Naire, CEO of Squid Ink Inc., is a ruthless Arms Dealer who intends to plunge the universe into eternal war so she can profit. Bajillia frees Lord Zedd from his imprisonment and uses him to initiate a hostile takeover of various planets while instituting Martial Law and imprisoning anyone on Earth who gets out of line. Bajillia also cares nothing for her own daughter Squillia, as she uses the latter as a Human Shield against the Power Rangers and later shrugs off her death as a result. Tricking Zedd into becoming super empowered and then imprisoning him in a container, Bajillia reveals she intends to destroy Zedd and unleash a wave of negative energy which will turn all the forces of good in the universe to dust.
  • Continuity Lock-Out:
    • Many plot threads only make sense if you watched Dino Fury prior. For example, Aiyon's reference to the planet of Nibyro, which coincides with Zedd's Fate Worse than Death, comes from the Season 1 episode, "Waking Nightmare".
    • The only way people will know about Heckyl being a Power Ranger is through the comics but showrunner Simon Bennett made it clear that the events of MMPR #31 are not acknowledged as Hasbro and Boom! Studios were not officially in consultation with each other during the production of Cosmic Fury.
  • Evil Is Cool: Ollie as a brainwashed Power Ranger is calm and calculating, his ranger outfit looks absolutely sick, and you can tell Kai Moya is having lots of fun.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: While this was in the works for a long while (since the end of Dino Fury's second Season), the same week the opening was shown, it's announced that the currently airing Sentai would also involve space in the form of the Galactinsects, made even more hilarious when both series would also have a newly made Ranger based off Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger/Power Rangers Dino Charge, with Kingohger having King Kyoryu Red while Cosmic Fury has the Dark Ranger (Deathryuger's counterpart, but with Kyoryu Navy's helmet) making his first on-screen appearance. This is made funnier given that the crossover with Kingohger and Kyoryuger reveals that Kingohger is a Stealth Sequel to Kyoryuger with baked in continuity, not unlike how Cosmic Fury also had baked in continuity.
  • Ho Yay: Aiyon's feelings for Zayto seem to go beyond the platonic this season.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Many fans guessed that Fern would be given a bigger role and become a Power Ranger herself, particularly the Orange Cosmic Fury Ranger, given her Promotion to Opening Titles and behind-the-scenes screenshots that have her associated with orange items.
    • Fans were quick to notice in the opening titles that Ollie is the only one not smiling, previews show no footage of him in the Zord cockpits, and with Billy's return, two blue triceratops Rangers seem somewhat redundant. Sure enough, Zedd reactivates his brainwashing on Ollie in the first episode, and Billy becomes the de-facto Cosmic Fury Blue Ranger until Ollie is saved.
    • Promotional art has Javi obtaining what looks like to be a mechanical arm, to which fans guess that he's going to have lost his old one and gets an artifical replacement. The first episode reveals he gained it after slamming Red Morphing Master's staff in a highly charged altar, disintegrating his arm.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Many fans are watching for either Billy's return as The Mentor of the season, Amelia taking on the role as the first female Red Ranger, or Fern having a bigger role as the Orange Cosmic Fury Ranger, meaning this would be the first time there is a queer Battle Couple for the heroes.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Bajilla Naire crosses it with her plan to create a War for Fun and Profit by sacrificing Zedd in a similar manner to how Zordon had Andros do it, but with the opposite effect of destroying all the good in the universe. Granted Zedd was no saint himself, but she would've made the universe far worse just to benefit herself.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Everything about Evil Ollie in the first three episodes. Imagining your loved one turning evil, thrashing things around in anger, pretending he's "changed" before showing that he hasn't. Lani herself tells Amelia that she's terrified.
    • In "Take Off", Solon is captured by Scuttle Worms, trapped in a sticky coccoon right next to a bunch of eggs. The implication is that she's intended to be the Scuttle Worm larvae's first meal.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • Within the first ten minutes of episode 1 alone we get Ollie turning evil, him kicking Zayto into outer space and Javi losing his arm.
    • The reveal in the closing moments of episode 9 where Lord Zedd transforms into a Morphing Master and becomes seemingly unbeatable, only to be betrayed by the CEO of Squid Ink Inc as well as Scrozzle and is trapped with the remaining masters in an energy chamber, with his former allies scheming to destroy it and unleash a catastrophic energy wave that will eliminate all good in the universe, a reverse of the notorious wave generated by the release of Zordon's energy that eliminated the United Alliance of Evil.
    • The appearance of Zordon himself in the series finale, appearing before Aiyon in the form of Zayto, seemingly with only a vague recollection of the morphing masters and his previous existence. According to the Masters, Zordon's spirit exists within a section of the grid that is beyond even their knowledge or reach. Aiyon tells Billy all about this in the closing moments of the series, leaving us to ponder what he will do with this knowledge.
  • Special Effect Failure: Some scenes with Zedd has his costume exhibit obvious seams and one point in "Beyond Repair" where the glove of the costume is improperly attached.
  • Tainted by the Preview: Many viewers were left a little underwhelmed by the new costumes, which have been called bland and bulky, and some have even said that production should have just used the Kyuranger costumes instead.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • In "Beyond Repair", Amelia and Lani have a talk about their fears of Ollie being corrupted permanently. When Amelia asks how Lani is so calm about this, Lani whispers, "I'm terrified."
    • The end of the series. Lord Zedd is defeated but Zayto reborn as a Morphin' Master means he must leave his friends behind. And now that he's immortal, he'll essentially outlive them all. As a reminder, he started Dino Fury thinking he was the last remaining Rafkonian Knight.
    • Speaking of which, everyone has to say goodbye to their original leader. Aiyon of course takes it the hardest as he loses his best friend which solidifies him as the last remaining Rafkon Knight. Unlike in Dino Fury where Zayto dies in battle, Aiyon gets to say goodbye this time.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: At no point do we see or hear from the original post-Z Wave Lord Zedd from the Zordon era, despite the fact that he would've served as a great foil to the other Zedd and it would've been a great confrontation.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • A new trailer released on September 1 revealed that Dark Ranger, the Dino Charge counterpart to Kyoryuger‘s Deathryuger will be showing up, a major surprise since he only showed up in the comics.
    • Even more surprising was that Naria and Bangray were going to be adapted for the show, given how Zyuohger was skipped over in favor of Ryusoulger and Kyuranger; along with most of the villainous suits of the Season thus far being either new or adapted from Kyuranger.
    • The appearance of Zordon himself in the finale, though in this instance he appears to Aiyon in the form of Zayto rather than as Zordon's physical actor David Fielding, his identity revealed to the audience and long-term fans only when he recites his famous well-wishing words 'may the power protect you'.
    • Absolutely no one expected the past teams' Megazords to appear in the final episode, and while the original Dino Megazord may have been predictable, the choice to also feature the Astro, Galaxy, Ninja Blaze and Beast-X Megazords came very left-field.
    • And finally, whoever thought we'd see Rita Repulsa again? Even if it's just a nightmare version of her.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?:
    • The Ranger suits have been criticized, among other reasons, for their switch to fabric and use of padding to make the actors look muscular feels less like a fresh new Ranger design and more like a generic superhero costume. The lack of any sort of detail on the chest has also been criticized for making the suits look even more flat and uninteresting. This perception only worsened when Ollie's evil ranger suit was revealed to be much more detailed and appropriately colorful and was received very warmly in comparison, making many wonder why couldn't the heroic suits be just as inventive as his.
    • The Master Zedd suit, while visually impressive, wasn't designed to be durable enough to withstand the rigors of filming a fight scene, which is a somewhat important thing for the villain of your series to be able to do. As a result, the final confrontation doesn't include an actual battle with him simply because they couldn't risk damaging the costume.
